NEW ARRIVALS...
(items coming into our inventory for the first time)

Argentina
- Argentina and Chile

  • 2005
Achával Ferrer Finca Altimira Malbec (Argentina)
($79.99) Malbec sourced from La Consulta, a site 1050 meters above sea level. Hard work is completed during the eleven months in the vineyard, to produce grapes that will need very little intervention during the winemaking process. The climate, the viticultural program, the irrigation management, everything is thought as a step toward the goal of true expression of the vineyard. Finca Altamira's personality shines through the wine, vintage after vintage, with a recognizable and repeated signature. Fermentation takes place in a small tank, and afterwards the wine is pressed and racked into French oak barrels, 100% new, where it is then aged for 14 months and bottled without fining or filtering.

  • 2005
Achával Ferrer Finca Mirador Malbec (Argentina)
($79.99) 100% malbec from the Medrano region. Finca Mirador's personality shines through the wine, vintage after vintage, with a recognizable and repeated signature. Fermentation took place in a small tank. The wine was pressed and racked into French oak barrels, 100% new, where it was then aged for 14 months, and bottled, like all Achával Ferrer wine, without fining or filtering. We strongly recommend decanting this wine at least an hour before drinking.

  • 2005
    Achával Ferrer Quimera (Malbec/Cab/Merlot) (Argentina)
($37.99) This blend of malbec, cabernet sauvignon and merlot comes from La Consulta, Medrano and Tupungato. The winemaking team worked in the vineyards in search of different aspects for each variety. These were thought of as parts of a complex wine, in such a way that the total is more than the sum of the parts. The location of the vineyards, the age of the plants, the viticultural program and the irrigation schedules, all worked towards the same goal. Once in the winery, each variety underwent primary fermentation in a small tank. The early blending is a risky practice, but helps towards a seamless integration of the varieties, a wine with only "one soul". The result is a wine that is not just the sum of three varietals, but another milestone in the search of an ideal. That is the explanation of the Quimera name: an impossible goal, but one worth working for.

  • 2006
    Achával-Ferrer Malbec Mendoza
($19.99) From 100% malbec grown in Vistalba, at 980 meters above sea level. Intense, pure, full of black fruit flavors and young aromas, this Malbec emphasizes the soul of Malbec, the undisputed king of Argentine reds. The wine was aged during 10 months in oak barrels, 95% French and 5% American. Nevertheless, special care is taken to preserve the necessary balance between wood and fruit without losing its spontaneity. Non clarified and unfiltered.

  • 2005
Budini Malbec (Argentina) ($8.99) Dark red/purple color. Very perfumed with aromas of ripe black cherries and some sweet oak. Full, fleshy, and jammy in the mouth with loads of ripe and spicy red and black fruits. Great structure with loads of ripe, fleshy tannins, and a long, long finish. Wow! This is one that you buy by the case to take home to amaze your friends and family. You can drink it tonight or over the next few years to enjoy the Malbec fruit flavors at their best. It will pair well with traditional red-friendly foods like hamburgers, steak, pork chops and ribs, pizza, spaghetti with meat sauce, and grilled or roasted chicken. Great all by itself too!

  • 2005
Dominio del Plata, BenMarco, Malbec (Argentina) ($17.99) 89 points from Wine & Spirits! They say, "A lovely mixture of fig, blackberry and cherry defines this opulent Malbec, with powerful acidity refreshing the ripe fruit. It's a good choice for bife de chorizo. 6/2007"

  • 2006
Dominio del Plata, Crios Malbec (Argentina) ($11.99) Crios means offspring (as in children). Argentine winemaker Susana Balbo selected a word to express the notion that these are wines that haven’t quite “grown up” to the same level of quality and maturity as her more expensive Susana Balbo signature label wines, but they receive the same loving care and attention throughout the winemaking process. The label features a series of three connected and overlapping hands, an image inspired by a Mayan artifact. The three hands represent Susana and her two children. By definition, Crios wines are meant to be consumed while still young and vibrant and have great fruit expression. This fruit forward Malbec is a crowd pleaser, and priced for summer parties and BBQs.

  • 2006
Dominio del Plata, Crios, Rosé of Malbec (Argentina) ($9.99) Food and Wine rates this one of the 25 best wines for the summerand designate it a "Star Selection"! They say, "Star Argentine winemaker Susana Balbo uses old-vine Malbec grapes from the Agrelo subregion of Mendoza to create this lightly spicy, strawberry-inflected rose. 6/2007" 88 points and a "Best Buy" from the Wine Enthusiast 7/2007.

  • 2005
Dominio del Plata, Susana Balbo, Malbec (Argentina) ($24.99) 90 points from Wine and Spirits magazine! They say, "Behind the toasted oak aroma is a generous core of black fruit that feels energetic and bright. Give it two to three years in your cellar to reveal its juicy potential. 6/2007"

  • 2006
La Posta del Viñatero Cocina Blend ($13.99) 60% Malbec, 20% Bonarda, 20% Syrah aged for 10 months in 70% French and 30% American oak barriques, 20% new. The blend impresses you right from the start. Aromas of red cherries and raspberries are infused with mocha and spice hints that give up the secret about what's to come. Your first sip washes braodly across your palate like a flood of sweet, fresh fruit and the viscous mouthfeel keeps the flavors lingering for awhile. The hints of baking spice and some oak keep the flavors fresh and lively. This is a wine that you'll wnat to stanck up in your wine rack (or closet) for any occasion. Great all by itself or with all of your favorite red wine foods.

  • 2006
La Posta del Viñatero Malbec Pizzella Vineyard ($15.99) Beautiful red/purple color with aromas of red cherries, red raspberries, dark chocolate and baker's spice. On the palate, the wine shows fresh, vibrant red berry flavors along with hints of sandalwood and spice, and even a hint of violets in the finish. Don't be concerned if you find yourself inhaling deeply from your glass, over and over...it is just your nose's way of telling you that it wants its fair share! This is a medium-bodied and well-structured wine that is incredibly full of life and born to be enjoyed with food and friends. Goes great with everything from hamburgers and chicken to pizza and mild cheeses. An awesome value to boot.

  • 2005
Tikal Patriota (Argentina) ($22.99) 91 points Wine and Spirits magazine! They say, "Bonarda and Malbec, Argentina's flagship grapes, offer all their charm in the blend: The bonarda delivers juicy, ripe red fruit and a soft lush texture; the malbec adds elegant tannins plus violet and dry red cherry notes. The result is delicious and vibrant, ready to pour now with slices of proscuitto. 6/2007" 90 points from the Wine Spectator! They say, " Bonarda (60%)/ Malbec (40%). With an alluring nose of spice, mocha, and cocoa powder, this also delivers a pure, racy palate of red plum and currant fruit, with a long lingering finish. 5/31/2007"

Australia

  • 2002 Clarendon Hills "Liandra Vineyard" Syrah - 11 available ($59.95) 93 points Robert Parker: "The beautiful 2002 Syrah Liandra Vineyard exhibits aromas of pepper, black fruits, acacia flowers, and subtle new oak. Full-bodied with an expansive mid-palate in addition to a gorgeously long finish, it is an elegant yet well-endowed Syrah to drink over the next 10-15 years. Roman Bratasiuk is one of Planet Earth’s greatest winemakers, and obviously a top-notch viticulturist given his obsession with sourcing extraordinary fruit from ancient McLaren Vale vineyards." (10/04)

  • 2003
Dutschke "St. Jakobi" Shiraz Barossa Valley South Australia ($31.99) 91 points Wine Spectator: "Lithe and supple for a big wine, weaving its plum, blackberry, caramel and spice character into a cohesive whole, letting the flavors linger against fine tannins. Drink now through 2013. 800 cases imported" (12/05)

  • 2005
Inkwell "Wild Thing" Shiraz McLaren Vale South Australia ($19.99)

  • 2002
Penfolds St. Henri Shiraz South Australia ($39.99) 93 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Deep ruby. Powerful cherry, blackberry, blackcurrant, tobacco and Asian spices on the nose, with lovely floral accents. Lush, superconcentrated and remarkably deep, showing an almost candied sweetness to the dark berry flavors, along with fruitcake and licorice notes. This is sweeter than any vintage of St. Henri I've seen to this point. Finishes with supple tannins and superb length. In the current batch of Penfolds releases, this one gives the new Grange some stiff competition." (Jul/Aug 06) 92 points Robert Parker: "A classic effort, the 2002 Shiraz St. Henri (91% Shiraz and 9% Cabernet Sauvignon) was aged 14 months in old 1,460 liter vats. First introduced in 1953, the St. Henri offering is considered to be a quintessential old Southern Australian-styled red. The 2002 was sourced from the Barossa, McLaren Vale, Clare Valley, and the Fleurieu Peninsula. This stunningly rich, distinctive Shiraz offers up scents of Provencal herbs, bay leaves, blackberries, black currants, new saddle leather, and loads of meaty characteristics. Rich, texturally opulent, and soft, this heady offering should drink well for 10-12 years. It is also a very good bargain in the scheme of Penfolds’ pricing." (10/06) 90 points Wine Spectator: "Fresh, exuberant and juicy, with blueberry and plum flavors shaded with hints of white pepper and sage as the finish lingers against fine tannins. Drink now through 2014." (09/06)

  • 2006
Torbreck "Juveniles" Grenache-Mataro-Shiraz ($15.99) 60% grenache, 20% shiraz and 20% mataro, from 40- to 150-year-old vines. This red was fermented in single vineyard batches, blended in tank and gently persuaded through natural malo-lactic fermentation before being bottled unfined and unfiltered. As in year's past, it is luscious and teeming with everything purple. This winery is clearly on a roll, year after year.

Austria - Austria and Hungary

  • 2006 Heidi Schröck Weissburgunder ($21.99)

  • 2006
    Schloss Gobelsburg Riesling "Gobelsburger" ($17.99)

Chile - Argentina and Chile

  • 2005 Arboleda Carmenere (Chile) ($14.99) 92 points from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (06/07).

  • 2005
MontGras Antu Ninquen Syrah (Chile) ($15.99) Paul Hobbs, a leading California winemaker with an international reputation for developing world-class South American wines, works closely with owner Hernán Gras and winemaker Santiago Margozzini to craft the limited production Antu wines from the Ninquén Mountain Estate vineyard. Very spicy; notes of black and white pepper mingle with leather, clove and ripe black fruit supported by oak in this broad shouldered red. On the palate it is full-bodied, harmonious and expressive with mellow tannins and a structured mid-palate. According to Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The Antu Ninquen wines come from a single vineyard atop the plateau of Ninquen Mountain in the Colchagua Valley. The well-known Paul Hobbs serves as a consultant to the project. The 2005 Antu Ninquen Syrah has 12% Cabernet Sauvignon added to the blend. The wine was aged for 18 months in French and American oak before being bottled unfined and unfiltered. Purple-colored, the wine offers a spicy perfume of pepper, leather, earth, and blackberry. Firmly structured, this full-bodied wine has good flavors and balance but will require several years in the bottle to fully express itself." (06/07)

France - 2006 Pre-Arrival Bordeaux

  • 2006 Angélus, St-Emilion Pre-Arrival ($189.99) 92-95 points Robert Parker: "...the 2006 is a classic blend of 62% Merlot and 38% Cabernet Franc. An inky/blue/purple color precedes a bouquet of charcoal, blueberries, blackberries, vanilla, and roasted coffee. Revealing no hardness from unripe tannin, it is an opulent, fleshy, sensationally rich effort with a fabulous texture as well as a long finish. Only slightly below the quality of the monumental 2005, the 2006 will be drinkable early, and should last for 20 years. The natural alcohol is approximately 14%. (04/07) 92-94 points Wine Spectator: "A clean wine, with lovely berry and mineral character. Full-bodied, with fine tannins and a long, caressing finish. This is extremely well made." (03/07) K&L's notes - 65% merlot. At Joanne-exotic nose and flavor. Extremely ripe. Huge wine. Put it away!! At property-Black color. Very spicy-very well integrated. Very ripe nose. Blackberriess and chocolate on the nose. Excellent balance. Classic and dense on palate. A step behind the monumental 2005! ** Ralph Sands: Deep purple/black wine with lovely aromas of fresh grapes, loaded with zesty acid, fine balance, classic style wine in ’06, not over the top extraction. Alex Brisoux: Dark intense color, sweet cacao, plumy elegant ripe fruit, big wine, long finish, great Angelus. Please note - 2006 Bordeaux futures will arrive between Jan 2009 and July 2009. We will contact you for shipping instructions.

  • 2006
    Ausone, St-Emilion

    Pre-Arrival
    - 12 available
($999.00) 95-97 points Robert Parker: "The inky/blue-colored 2006 Ausone possesses a striking perfume of minerals, flowers, blackberries, and blueberries. Even though 100% new oak is utilized in the wine’s upbringing, there is no hint of wood in the aromas or flavors. Despite its fabulous texture, medium to full body, size, richness, and profound depth of flavor and nuance, it is surreal in its lightness and delicacy. Prospective purchasers should be aware that the 2006, a legend in the making, will require 10-12 years of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2050. Obsessive perfectionist proprietor Alain Vauthier’s extraordinary attention to detail in both the vineyard and cellar has resulted in virtually perfect wines in vintage after vintage. Ausone is a 50-year wine, and generations to come will regard them with almost mythical acclaim." (04/07) 92-94 points Wine Spectator: "This is a solid Ausone, with plenty of blackberry and licorice character. Full and velvety, with a solid core of fruit and medium chewy tannins. Not the 2005, but well done." (03/07) Please note - 2006 Bordeaux futures will arrive between Jan 2009 and July 2009. We will contact you for shipping instructions.

  • 2006
    Cheval Blanc, St-Emilion

    Pre-Arrival
($739.00) 92-95 points Robert Parker: "Only 60% of the harvest was utilized in this marvelous blend of 55% Merlot and 45% Cabernet Franc. As always, the 2006 Cheval Blanc is made in a lighter, more elegant style based on finesse, purity, and beautiful nuances. A deep ruby/purple color is accompanied by scents of crushed rocks, menthol, raspberries, cherries, and assorted blue as well as black fruits. An impeccable integration of new oak, medium body, terrific palate penetration and purity, and light tannins suggest it will be drinkable in 2-3 years, but it should put on considerable weight because of its large Cabernet Franc component. While the 2006 may not eclipse the 2005, 2000, or 1998, it is not far off in terms of quality and longevity. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2028." 92-94 points Wine Spectator: "Very rich, showing lots of blackberry and licorice, with just a hint of wood. Full-bodied, with dense but polished tannins. This is subtle. Very, very pretty and elegant. Silky and long. Almost 95-100." (03/07) K&L's notes - 55% merlot, 45% cabernet franc. Black cherry, black licorice aromas. Only 28 htl/htr. Lots of strength on the palate. Will be very good. ** Ralph Sands: Powerful Cheval, dark fruit, intense wine with grip and tannin, not a smoothy in 2006, strong claret. Please note - 2006 Bordeaux futures will arrive between Jan 2009 and July 2009. We will contact you for shipping instructions.

  • 2006
    Ducru-Beaucaillou, St-Julien
    Pre-Arrival
($134.99) 94-96 points Robert Parker: "Similar in style to the 1996, proprietor Bruno Borie continues to curtail yields, now producing just under 10,000 cases of the grand vin, and the rest of the production going into the increasingly high quality second wine, La Croix de Ducru Beaucaillou. The backward, tannic, dense purple-colored 2006 Ducru Beaucaillou offers sweet mineral-infused black cherry and cassis fruit interwoven with notions of graphite and truffles. Powerful, pure, rich, and intense, it should be at its peak between 2017-2035." (04/07) 92-94 points Wine Spectator: "Layered and rich, with lots of licorice and berry character. Turns to currants. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a long finish. Very serious. Like it a lot. 1996 again. This is almost 95-100." (03/07) K&L's notes - Very spicy wine. Aristocratic-great structure and balance. Classic style, not as opulent as their 2005. Lots of power but still in balance. Like a combination of 1995 and 1996. ** Ralph Sands: Serious grapey fruit. Pure and deep, long in the mouth. Superb tannin control. Sweet, regal fruit with hints of black licorice. So elegant-will be very long lived. Alex Brisoux: concentrated ripe black fruit, masculine wine, tobacco, good structure. Please note - 2006 Bordeaux futures will arrive between Jan 2009 and July 2009. We will contact you for shipping instructions.

  • 2006
    Gloria, St-Julien (1.5L)
    Pre-Arrival
($64.99) 89-91 points Wine Spectator: "Lots of rich fruit, with fresh plum, coffee and berry character. Full-bodied, with tannins that build on your palate and follow through. Well structured. The best Gloria in a long time." (03/07) 89-91 points Robert Parker: "Gloria has been producing terrific wines over recent vintages. The 2006 is a slightly more structured effort than the fleshy 2005, but it offers a deep ruby/purple color as well as loads of black cherry and currant fruit interwoven with notes of cedar, herbs, and spice. A major sleeper of the vintage, it is dense, rich, and surprisingly opulent with admirable fruit purity and an enticing texture. It should drink well young, yet evolve for 15+ years." (04/07) K&L's notes - Earthy, black fruit aromas. Plummy. Sweet all the way through. Great depth. Very nice wine. Bravo. *+ Ralph Sands: Nice combo of ripe black fruits in a solid package. Just amazingly consistent wine made by Gloria, and what a value! Please note - 2006 Bordeaux futures will arrive between Jan 2009 and July 2009. We will contact you for shipping instructions.

    Pre-Arrival
    - 12 available
($99.99) 89-91 points Wine Spectator: "Velvety and fruity. Lots of mineral and berry character. I would like to see a little more fruit in the center palate, but it's clean and racy. And it should grow in the barrel. Better than the 2005. Close to 92-94." (03/07) K&L's notes - 60% cabernet sauvignon, 30% merlot, 5.5% cabernet franc, 3% petit verdot and 1.5% malbec. At UGC-big wine and quite ripe. This has good middle fruit. At property-black cherry, cola aromas. Sweet cherry entry. Good finish-slightly light on mid palate. *1/2 Ralph Sands: Lovely round/plump fruit with hints of earth and tobacco. The fruit is long and very much in control overall. Alex Brisoux: Earth, spice, ripe fruit, supple tannins, fruit forward, nice structure, missing on the finish. Please note - 2006 Bordeaux futures will arrive between Jan 2009 and July 2009. • 2006
    Haut-Brion Blanc, Pessac-Léognan

    Pre-Arrival
($579.00) 94-97 points Robert Parker: "This is a strong vintage for Bordeaux’s dry white wines, probably as good or better than 2005. Crisp acidity combined with outstanding concentration and the fact that most of the white grapes were harvested before the rains began in mid-September resulted in an impressive group of wines." (04/07) 92-94 points Wine Spectator: "Shows some lovely honey and apple character, with green apple, melon and mineral. Almost spicy. Full and lively, with a long finish. Very pretty already." (03/07) K&L's notes - A normal 39 htl/hectare. 56% sauvignon blanc and 44% semillon. Cinnamon, clove, pear aromas. Great spice on the palate. Tremendous length-fabulous wine. Will be $$$ if you can find it. **1/2+ RS: The chance to taste this is why you stay in the wine business! Please note - 2006 Bordeaux futures will arrive between Jan 2009 and July 2009. We will contact you for shipping instructions.

  • 2006
    Haut-Brion, Pessac (1.5L)
    Pre-Arrival
    - 12 available
($1049.00) 92-94 points Robert Parker: "The 2006 Haut-Brion was somewhat closed when I tasted it, especially when compared to its blockbuster rival/sibling, La Mission Haut-Brion. The Haut-Brion (11,000 cases) is a tannic, backward wine at present revealing classic notes of smoke, scorched earth, liquid minerals, plums, currants, and cherries, medium body, and sensational purity as well as concentration. The high tannins will no doubt soften with aging in barrel, and, as Haut-Brion often does, the wine should expand and put on weight. While not as superb as the 2005 or 2000, the 2006 appears to be built along the lines of the 1996. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2030+." (04/07) K&L's notes - 57% merlot, 41% cabernet sauvignon, 2% cabernet franc. Early-ripening merlot here was superb-just like La Mission. Same level of alcohol and tannin as 2005. Very focused wine-linear. Elegant style. Fresh blackberries on the palate with undertones of stones. Has some chocolate nuances in the finish. Very fine! **+ RS: Powerful aromas of perfectly ripe grapes and leather, very classic and intensely focused. Will need decades. AB: Closed nose, fresh cassis fruit, good minerality, slight meatiness, elegant well-balance finish. One of the best wines of the vintage. Please note - 2006 Bordeaux futures will arrive between Jan 2009 and July 2009. We will contact you for shipping instructions.

The high tannins will no doubt soften with aging in barrel, and, as Haut-Brion often does, the wine should expand and put on weight. While not as superb as the 2005 or 2000, the 2006 appears to be built along the lines of the 1996. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2030+." (04/07) 92-94 points Wine Spectator: "Captivating aromas of coffee, spice, violets and cedar..." (03/07) K&L's notes - 57% merlot, 41% cabernet sauvignon, 2% cabernet franc.

    La Mission Haut-Brion, Pessac-Léognan

    Pre-Arrival
($539.99) 96-100 points Robert Parker: "This utterly profound, exceptionally rich, full-bodied, thick La Mission is undeniably one of the candidates for the “wine of the vintage.” It possesses a dense ruby/purple color followed by sweet blue and black fruit notes intertwined with notions of burning embers and flowers. Unctuous, massively fruity, and thick, this is a great La Mission! Anticipated maturity: 2012-2035+. With the elimination of La Tour-Haut-Brion from the Dillon estate’s portfolio, the production of La Mission’s second wine, La Chapelle de la Mission, has dramatically increased to 4,000 cases. I rated the 2006 La Chapelle de la Mission (89-90)." (04/07) 95-100 points Wine Spectator: "This is so perfumed and pretty. Classy and elegant on the nose, with currant, light vanilla and a hint of lilac. Full-bodied, with ultrafine tannins and a long, long finish. All in finesse. Very impressive for the vintage; could be the wine of the vintage." K&L's notes - 59% merlot, 40% cabernet sauvignon, 1% cabernet franc. Tons of richness and tannin on the palate. Very sweet on palate with mineral undertones. Big wine with a tough edge. Should be superb after long ageing period. **+ Ralph Sands: Loads of very strong fruit, very tightly concentrated, lots of tannin and acid. Patience required." Please note - 2006 Bordeaux futures will arrive between Jan 2009 and July 2009. We will contact you for shipping instructions.

    La Mondotte, St-Emilion
    Pre-Arrival
($249.00) 93-96 points Robert Parker: "The jewel of Stephan von Neipperg’s empire, this 12-acre vineyard had a very late harvest in 2006, with the Merlot being picked between October 2-4 and the Cabernet Franc not finished until October 11. The final blend is usually 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc. The 2006 was extremely backward when I tasted it (it was probably just coming out of malo), so this rating may be conservative. The wine displays a deep saturated purple color along with a big, sweet nose of graphite, blueberries, blackberries, espresso roast, and flowers. There is excellent fruit on the attack, but the wine needs time to calm down. It should put on weight and reveal more seamlessness after aging in barrel. The raw potential for something even more exquisite than my initial rating suggests is obvious. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2030." (04/07) 89-91 points Wine Spectator: "A rich wine, with plenty of blackberry and plum character. Full-bodied, with fine tannins and a medium finish. Needs a little bit more on the midpalate. Could move up to 92-94." (03/07) K&L's notes - 80% merlot, 20% cabernet franc. Black color. Tons of toasty oak. Power and structure. ??*+ Ralph Sands: Huge boysenberry fruit and sweetness, leading to a classic dry finish. A bit top heavy but pulls it off. Lafite-Rothschild, Pauillac

    Pre-Arrival
($529.99) 92-94 points Wine Spectator: "Racy and long, with beautiful blackberry and light coffee character and a licorice undertone. Full and racy, with a long, long finish. Structured and powerful, yet builds on the palate. Close to 95-100." (03/07) 91-94 points Robert Parker: "Lafite’s Merlot harvest occurred between September 15-22, and the Cabernet Sauvignon from September 27 until the end of the first week of October. Only 42% of the production made it into the grand vin (a blend of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot, and 2% Petit Verdot). The 2006 is a tannic, restrained effort that brings to mind the 1988. A deep ruby/purple color is followed by sweet aromas of graphite, creme de cassis, spice, and subtle wood. Medium-bodied and richly fruity with decent acidity and a long finish, it will require 8-10 years of cellaring, and should keep for 4-5 decades." (04/07) K&L's notes - 82% cabernet sauvignon, 16% merlot and 2% petit verdot. Very spicy, minty aromas. Some chocolate flavors and fine structure. Classic style and not as opulent as 2005. Very, very good but a step behind 2005. **+ RS: Exotic ripe grapes, strong acid, crisp, long and elegant-distance runner. Please note - 2006 Bordeaux futures will arrive between Jan 2009 and July 2009. We will contact you for shipping instructions.

    Latour, Pauillac

    Pre-Arrival
($539.99) 95-100 points Wine Spectator: "Very long. Wonderful licorice, berry and currant character. Full and silky, beautiful and pure. This is really distinguished. Feminine but strong. Classic Bordeaux style." (03/07) 93-96 points Robert Parker: "A modern version of the 1986 and 1996, the slightly austere 2006 will need a decade of aging. It should keep for 40-50 years." (04/07) K&L's notes - 86% cabernet sauvignon, 13% merlot, 1% cabernet franc. Great red fruit aromas with exotic Asian spices. Delicious palate entry that is quite sweet. Fresh with mineral and red berry flavors. Superb wine and quite focused. Not as opulent as 2005 but more classic style. A step behind their 2005 but very fine. They always make great wine-Unfortunately, few people can afford it. **1/2 Ralph Sands: Unlike the 2005 where Forts was far more opulent and exotic than Latour. In 2006 it’s back to normal. The first wine has all the flamboyance. Ultra thick, exotic old-vine fruit. Powerful, massive and concentrated. The softness of the tannins is impressive and hold this great wine together. Alex Brisoux: Incredible nose, spicy violets, roses, great layers, well structured wine, a bit tannic on finish. Please note - 2006 Bordeaux futures will arrive between Jan 2009 and July 2009. ($579.00) 95-100 points Wine Spectator: "Very racy and exciting, with pineapple, honey and vanilla character and loads of grapefruit and mineral. This could be one of the best young Lavilles I have had in a while. A lot of work was done selecting the best grapes because of rot, but this came out wonderfully. About a quarter of the grapes were selected out at harvest. 86 percent Semillon, 14 percent Sauvignon." (03/07) 92-94 points Robert Parker: "This is a strong vintage for Bordeaux’s dry white wines, probably as good or better than 2005. Crisp acidity combined with outstanding concentration and the fact that most of the white grapes were harvested before the rains began in mid-September resulted in an impressive group of wines." (04/07) K&L's notes - 86% semillon and 14% sauvignon blanc. More closed up on the nose. Reserved at this time, but the lemon/lime flavors are refreshing. Seems like alcohol is high but finishes very clean and crisp. **? Ralph Sands: Just a touch ore angular than HB and a great long ager. Alex Brisoux: WOW! Aromas of pear/peach, chalky/mineral, nice acidity, long clean crisp finish. A favorite. Please note - 2006 Bordeaux futures will arrive between Jan 2009 and July 2009. Long and round. Reminiscent of the excellent 1996 Las Cases, but better." (03/07) 93-95 points Robert Parker: "...only 40% of the production made it into the final blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14.5% Merlot, and a dollop of Cabernet Franc. This backward, deep ruby/purple-hued effort exhibits sweet, pure black cherry, raspberry, and cassis characteristics, soft, ripe tannin, and medium body. It reveals a strong similarity to its next door neighbor, Chateau Latour. The 2006 Las Cases will require 5-8 years of bottle age, and should drink well for 25-30 years." (04/07) K&L's notes - 85% cabernet sauvignon, 14.5% merlot, .5% cabernet franc. 13.29 degrees natural alcohol and only 41 htl/htr produced. Black color Nose a bit reserved but seems to be intense. Extremely spicy wine with tons of mineral and some cinnamon. Fabulous feel on the palate. Serious wine and close to their monumental 2005. **+ Ralph Sands: Always a bright and powerful package of intense red/black fruit, tight but sweet in the middle-long ager. Alex Brisoux: Cinnamon spice, nutmeg, very serious, lush, very charming wine. Please note - 2006 Bordeaux futures will arrive between Jan 2009 and July 2009. ($194.99) 90-92 points Robert Parker: "Latour’s second wine, the 2006 Les Forts de Latour, a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot, does not possess the depth of its bigger sibling. Nevertheless, it offers sweet, ripe berry fruit, crushed rock, smoke, and earth characteristics along with good precision and savoriness. It should drink nicely for 15-20 years." (04/07) 89-91 points Wine Spectator: "Very solid, with an excellent core of fruit and chewy tannins, but not too aggressive. Full body. Medium finish. Well done." (03/07) K&L's notes - 70% cabernet sauvignon, 30% merlot. Clyde had a hard time tasting this wine (perhaps palate fatigue at 7 pm after 11 hours of tasting?) Very good, deep purple color. Closed on the nose. Seems quite rich and tannic? Will taste again in June. *+? Ralph Sands: Deep rich old-vine cabernet sweetness, very long and no question, very good! AB: Lean, spicy, bight wine. So much finesse in the nose. What a wine. Similar to the 1995, which received 100 points." (03/07) 93-95 points Robert Parker: "The strictest selection ever instituted at this estate resulted in only 36% of the crop being utilized for the blend of 2006 Chateau Margaux. Composed of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot, it is similar to the 1996, but with sweeter, more seductive fruit in the nose. A big, tannic, dense effort displaying terrific purity, power, elegance, and a distinctive mineral/flower component, it is a medium to full-bodied wine of great nobility that should be at its finest between 2017-2050+." (04/07) K&L's notes - 90% cabernet sauvignon, 4% merlot, 4% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot. Piney aromas and quite a bit of spice upfront. Very big on the palate, yet silky and elegant. Seems integrated but a bit reserved today. Fresh wine that should be great-not up to the 2005. **+ Ralph Sands: A fine expression of high-toned, pure fruit, strong and focused, again not as opulent as some recent releases and finishes a bit dryer than usual, good spice on the finish. ($599.00) 96-100 points Robert Parker: "This extraordinary Mouton should turn out to be the finest they have made since the monumental 1982 and 1986...The final blend of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon and 13% Merlot is unusually high in Cabernet Sauvignon, but it possesses Mouton’s hallmarks of pure creme de cassis and flowers in addition to a toasty oak character. Profoundly concentrated, super-textured, and rich, Mouton’s powerful, full-bodied 2006 is unquestionably a strong candidate for the “wine of the vintage.” Kudos to Mouton’s winemaking team for fashioning this brilliant wine. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2050." (04/07) 95-100 points Wine Spectator: "Gorgeous aromas of currant, raspberry and mineral. Full-bodied, with ultrafine tannins. Long and caressing, building on the palate. Very pretty, very elegant. Subtle and seductive. This could be better than 2005. Wait and see." K&L's notes - Their best wine since the legendary 1986? Deep blackish color. Opulent, spicy nose. Lots of red berry flavors with cassis undertone. Explosive on the palate and very rich and round. Super round tannins-sweet middle fruit. This wine is much better (we think) than their 2005. Bravo! **1/2+ Please note - 2006 Bordeaux futures will arrive between Jan 2009 and July 2009.

(03/07) 91-94 points Robert Parker: "From only 50% of the harvest, administrator Thomas Duroux has produced a blend of 66% Cabernet Sauvignon and 34% Merlot from yields of 37 hectoliters per hectare. The 2006 reveals a touch of austerity along with an impressive dense purple color, and sweet aromas of flowers, licorice, black currants, oak, and underbrush. This structured, powerful, medium to full-bodied, beautifully made, ageworthy 2006 should be ready to drink in 5-6 years, and keep for 25-30." K&L's notes - 56% cabernet sauvignon, 44% merlot and no petit verdot this year. Only 37 htl/htr. Only 8,000 cases made-less than 2005. Lots of violet on the nose with undertones of cigar box and vanilla oak. Not in league with 2005, but lots of finesse and elegance. This is an elegant Palmer with classic undertones. Like 2004 with more finesse and ripeness. ** RS: Very classic in every way. The dark concentrated fruit has hints of roses/violets and cassis, nice tannins, no question very elegant, long finishing wine. ($249.99) 95-100 points Wine Spectator: "Full-bodied yet balanced and silky. Solid and rich, but not aggressive. Long and beautiful, with pure fruit. Less muscular than typical Pavie, but seductive. A beauty." (03/07) 96-98 points Robert Parker: "Another brilliant offering from Pavie, the 2006 reveals more sweet fruit and forwardness than the out-of-this-world yet more massive 2005. Low yields of 28 hectoliters per hectare, a blend of 70% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, a 37-day maceration, malolactic in barrel, and aging on its lees have resulted in a stunningly rich, dense purple-colored wine displaying a smorgasbord of red and black fruits intermixed with notions of crushed rocks, spring flowers, and subtle wood. Full-bodied, dense, and more fruit-forward than most Pavies, it possesses layers of flavor as well as a stunning finish that lasts for more than a minute..." (04/07) K&L's notes - Very ripe aromas-almost tending to overripe. Some whisky barrel characteristics.*1/2? RS: Also huge sweetness of crème de cassis fruit, but unlike Monbousquet it manages to retain its balance as well as a hint of elegance. Please note - 2006 Bordeaux futures will arrive between Jan 2009 and July 2009. We will contact you for shipping instructions.

  • 2006
    Pavie-Decesse, St-Emilion
    Pre-Arrival
($169.99) 94-96 points Robert Parker: "A tiny production of 1,200 cases ensures that not much of this wine is available, but it is one of the top dozen or so St.-Emilions produced since proprietors Chantal and Gerard Perse took over the estate. Cropped at 30 hectoliters per hectare, the wine enjoyed a 32-day maceration, malolactic in barrel, and aging on its lees. The result is an impressive inky/purple-hued 2006 offering up notes of crushed rocks, black raspberry jam, cold steel, flowers, and spice, and a terrific, full-bodied mouthfeel with no heaviness. Having already absorbed much of its new oak, it is rich and pure with excellent precision, length, and aging potential. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2030." (04/07) 89-91 points Wine Spectator: "Solid core of fruit , with silky tannins. Full-bodied and chewy. Slightly hollow midpalate, but stylish and long. Very clean. Almost 92-94." (03/07) K&L's notes - Sweet and ripe and powerful. Tons of fruit. Crushed blackberry flavors. Powerhouse. Very good. ** Ralph Sands: If I ran out of pancake syrup I could use this. Please note - 2006 Bordeaux futures will arrive between Jan 2009 and July 2009. We will contact you for shipping instructions.

  • 2006
    Pavillon Blanc, Margaux
    Pre-Arrival
($149.00) 94-96 points Robert Parker: "This is a strong vintage for Bordeaux’s dry white wines, probably as good or better than 2005. Crisp acidity combined with outstanding concentration and the fact that most of the white grapes were harvested before the rains began in mid-September resulted in an impressive group of wines." (04/07) 92-94 points Wine Spectator: "Shows lovely lemon and pineapple character, with hints of lime. Full and rich, with lively acidity and a long finish. Half the harvest was lost to frost, so there was a very small yield of 12 hectoliters, instead of the average 25." (03/07) K&L's notes - 50% of normal crop. 15° natural alcohol. Superb from the color to the nose and through the finish. Very limited availability. ** Ralph Sands: Brisk, crisp and very strong, this will be a long distance runner-put away! Please note - 2006 Bordeaux futures will arrive between Jan 2009 and July 2009. We will contact you for shipping instructions.

France - Beaujolais

  • 2005 Beaujolais, Domaine du Vissoux, Pierre Chermette ($12.99) Proprietor Pierre Chermette's yields are so low and the grapes so naturally ripe that he does not chaptalize. He uses only indigenous yeasts (no "banana yeast" culture, a la Duboeuf). Then a traditional, longer fermentation, aging in oak foudre and bottling for us with no filtration, and without adding any sulfites, in most vintages.

  • 2005
Fleurie, "Poncié", Domaine du Vissoux ($20.99) Poncié comes from a 3-hectare parcel in Fleurie. Vines are 30-years-old and are grown on soil with a high proportion of granite. This 2004 was aged for six months in oak foudres. It is an amazingly floral wine with aromas of iris, violets and roses, and hints of cherry and pepper, and very 'feminine' as Fleuries are said to be. On the palate this 100% gamay is sauve and supple with a long, silky finish. Drink over the next three to five years with white meat dishes like veal, poultry or the most traditional match, rabbit.

  • 2005
Moulin-a-Vent, "les Deux Roches", Domaine du Vissoux, Pierre Chermette ($21.90) Proprietor Pierre Chermette's yields are so low and the grapes so naturally ripe that he does not chaptalize. He uses only indigenous yeasts (no "banana yeast" culture, a la Duboeuf). Then a traditional, longer fermentation, aging in oak foudre and bottling for us with no filtration, and without adding any sulfites, in most vintages. This Moulin-a-Vent is fine and supple, the ideal warm weather red, and just the thing to serve with wurst cooked outside on the grill!

France - Bordeaux - Red

  • 2000 La Clusiere, St. Emilion - 6 available ($725.00) 100 Points Robert Parker!! :From this hillside 2.6-acre vineyard planted with 100% Merlot a veritable legend has emerged. The 2000 is undoubtedly the finest La Clusiere ever produced. A magnificent effort possessing off-the-chart extract levels as well as a remarkably intense palate impression, it tastes like the undistilled essence of a particular vineyard and wine type. The color is opaque blue/purple. The bouquet reveals dense blackberry, plum, and cassis aromas infused with minerals, licorice, espresso, and graphite. Full-bodied, massively-endowed, concentrated, and incredibly well-delineated, with high but velvety tannin, this is a magnificent wine. It was bottled, as are all the Perse wines, with neither fining nor filtration. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2035.

  • 2004
Léoville-Barton, St-Julien ($59.99) 92 points Robert Parker: "This is an impressively endowed vin de garde that should age effortlessly for 20-30 years. How Anthony Barton continues to fashion uncompromisingly primordial Bordeaux that are always among the biggest and densest of all the St.-Juliens is beyond me, but he does it year in and year out. Moreover, when it’s time to set the price, he appears to have the consumer foremost in his mind. The 2004 is a classic Leoville-Barton meant for long aging. Concentrated, with loads of smoke, creme de cassis, forest floor, and earthy notes emerge from this impressive, but oh, so backward wine. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2030+." (06/07) K&L's notes - Tons of cassis and chocolate on the nose. Best at Joanne tasting. Amazing as usual-blueberry and blackberry flavors. Fabulous balance-one of the best of the vintage. Power with elegance.

  • 1999 Clos de Tart, Grand Cru, Mommessin - 9 available ($250.00) 92 points Allen Meadows: "Obvious oak notes frame knockout aromas of wonderfully intense black cherry fruit loaded with cassis and a touch of new oak introduce medium-bodied, sweet, harmonious and long flavors all underpinned by racy minerality. The tannins are firm and the density of extract impressive and the length incredible. This should be very long-lived indeed." (Jun 13, 2002)

  • 2002
Clos de Tart, Grand Cru, Mommessin
    - 12 available
($250.00) 95 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Bright red-ruby. Highly nuanced, expressive nose combines strawberry, raspberry, minerals, lavender, chocolate, underbrush and fennel. Superconcentrated, silky and sweet in the mouth but with superb definition and energy. The wine's sheer density of material completely buffers its 14+% alcohol. Finishes dry and classic, with explosive rising fruit and terrific thrust. The tannins are buried in fruit and soil tones. A great Burgundy." (Mar/Apr 05) 93 points and a Collectibles designation from the Wine Spectator: "A big red, round and sappy, exhibiting black cherry, kirsch and sweet spice aromas and flavors. Picks up some chocolate and smoke midpalate, with the richness and exuberant fruit of the vintage. Fine length; needs time to absorb the oak and tannins. Best from 2005 through 2010. 350 cases imported." (09/04) 91 points Allen Meadows: "An expressive, extremely ripe black fruit nose nuanced by hints of torrefaction, earth and coffee are followed by soft, delicious, round and textured flavors underpinned with completely buffered tannins and loads of ripe extract. This is a powerful yet supple wine that does seem to carry its alcohol well with only a trace of finishing warmth. This is a delicious and unbelievably long wine though less elegant than several previous vintages and as I noted above, I prefer the '01 to this." (Burghound.com, Jan 01, 2005)

  • 1999
Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru, Perrieres, Domaine Heresztyn ($34.99) Allen Meadows says: "Moderately intense, direct and precise red pinot fruit aromas lead to very structured, medium weight flavors and a persistent finish. Oddly enough for such a structured wine, it manages to retain a sense of harmony and balance, indeed even elegance on the finish plus a nice note of minerality." (Burghound 01/03) Clive Coates writes: "Again, this is pretty and elegant...Classy... Quite Long. good Plus"

  • 1998
Vosne Romanée, Gerard Mugneret ($29.99) Clive Coates writes: Stylish. Medium to medium-full Stucture. Good ripe tannins. Again lovely intense ripe fruit, especially for a village wine. Very Good Plus. (The Vine, 02/00)

  • 2005 Batard Montrachet, Grand Cru, Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey (1.5L) - 1 available ($649.95) 96 Points Wine Spectator: "A muscular white, displaying plenty of apple, peach, lemon cream and toasty oak notes against a rich texture. As this lingers on the palate, a mineral element comes to the fore. Though this should please early on, the firm structure will serve it well over time. Best from 2009 through 2025." (Bruce Sanderson, 6/18/07)

  • 2005

  • 2005
Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru, Maltroie, Domaine Philippe Colin
    - 12 available
($64.99) 90 Points from Allen Meadows: "This is nicely broad on the nose with good if not exceptional elegance to the ripe straw and orchard fruit aromas that lead to generous but not fat middle weight flavors that deliver good depth and the barest hint of backend minerality on the relatively tight and linear finish. Good stuff here." (Burghound 07/07) 88-91 PIonts Tanzer: "High-pitched aromas of orange, tangerine and vanillin oak. Then juicy and energetic in the mouth, with good lift to the lemon, mineral and crushed stone flavors. Offers lovely balance and thrust." (International Wine cellar, 07/06)

  • 2005
Chassagne Montrachet, Blanchots Dessus, 1er Cru, Domaine Anglada Deleger ($63.99) Another spin-off from the Dleger family. Blanchots Dessus is always one of my personal favorites. Somehow it is neither Chassagne nor Puligny, with more in common with the Grands Crus, which it is directly next to. It also has a wonderful mineral note that lingers on the finish. (Keith Wollenberg, K&L Burgundy Buyer)

($85.99) According to Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "(tasted from a tank) Aromatic fruit-driven nose conveys an impression of sweetness. Supple and fairly full in the mouth, with good density of material. Shows the thickness of the year..." (Jul/Aug 06)

  • 2005
Chevalier Montrachet, Grand Cru, Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey
    - 2 available
($349.95) 94 Points Allen Meadows: "This is cut from the same cloth as the Folatières as it is tremendously elegant with white flower, spice and beautifully complex aromas that merge seamlessly into strikingly beautiful and textured medium weight plus flavors trimmed in noticeable but not dominant wood on the intensely mineral finish that seems to go on and on. This is a really classy effort that glides like silk across the palate yet has the intensity and focus of a fine Chevalier." (Burghound 07/07) 93 Points Wine Spectator: "Loads of mineral aromas and flavors highlight this vibrant white. Floral, hazelnut and lime notes add complexity. A little assertive today, but give this time to settle down. Has a fine, mouthwatering finish. Best from 2010 through 2025. 50 cases made" (Bruce Sanderson, 6/18/07)

  • 2005
Criots Batard Montrachet, Grand Cru, Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey
    - 1 available
($349.95) Allen Meadows writes about Pierre-Yves Colin: "Pierre Yves Colin, son of Marc and former winemaker for Domaine Marc Colin (see above), has left his father’s domaine completely as of November, 2005 to focus full time on the tiny négociant operation he began in 2001. He will also take a small portion of his future inheritance and as of 2006, will exploit 4 ha. His present approach focuses on microscopic quantities of the finest raw materials that he can buy. They are bought in the form of must and generally in only one or two barrel lots." And he goes on to say "Colin has been on a roll and these are definitely wines to follow as I agree with him that the wines continue to gain in finesse and elegance and in particular, the wood treatment that was a good deal more evident in 2001 and 2002 has become more subtle and better integrated into the core of the wines." (Burghound 07/07)

  • 2005
    Meursault 1er Cru, Genevrieres, Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey
    - 3 available
($119.95) 92 points Allen Meadows: "A completely different nose is present here with seductive, spicy and slightly exotic fruit aromas marry into intense, delineated and explosive medium plus weight flavors, all wrapped in a vibrant and terrifically long finish that is picture-perfect Meursault in character. There is also a touch of wood on the backend but it’s subtle and will be absorbed in time." (Burghound 07/07) 91 points Wine Spectator: "A laser, this is elegant and medium-bodied, exhibiting subtle apple, hazelnut, butterscotch and mineral notes. A bit tight now, this opens up on the lingering finish to reveal its potential. Best from 2009 through 2015. 100 cases made." (Bruce Sanderson, 06/18/07)

  • 2005
Puligny Montrachet, Les Enseignères, Domaine Ramonet
    - 3 available
($56.99) According to Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Peach, orange and butter on the nose. A step up in density from the basic village offering; this is drier and more minerally and possesses more force, not to mention length. Seems built to age." (Jul/Aug 06)

France - Burgundy Pre-Arrival Misc.

  • 2005 Bourgogne Passetoutgrain, Domaine Jean Tardy Pre-Arrival ($13.99) Grown in the village of Vosne Romanée, below their house, on the flats between the house and the railroad tracks, this is bright, focused and a very attractive combination of 50% Pinot and 50% Gamay. This wine is not yet available, & is sold on a pre-arrival basis. We will notify you on arrival.

  • 2005
Chambolle-Musigny, Les Athets, Domaine Jean Tardy
    Pre-Arrival
($43.99) Allen Meadows writes: "A touch of reduction detracts mildly from the earthy and ripe mostly red fruit profile that merges into rich, full and dense flavors that offer lovely balance and length if not necessarily much Chambolle elegance though I like the vibrancy of the finale." (Burghound, 01/07) This wine is not yet available, & is sold on a pre-arrival basis. We will notify you on arrival.

  • 2005
Clos Vougeot, Grand Maupertuis, Grand Cru, Domaine Jean Tardy
    Pre-Arrival
    - 5 available
($123.95) 91-93 Points from Allen Meadows, who writes: "(from Grand Maupertuis). The 100% wood treatment is evident as this is distinctly oaky at present with the earthy and smoky black pinot, cassis and black raspberry fruit struggling to be heard from with big, rich and powerful flavors that saturated the palate with ample dry extract while the wood resurfaces on the impressively long finish. This is delicious if woodier than I personally prefer but there is so much material that I don’t believe the wood will compromise the balance or ageability going forward." (Burghound, 01/07) This wine is not yet available, & is sold on a pre-arrival basis. We will notify you on arrival.

  • 2005
Echézeaux, "Les Treux", Grand Cru, Domaine Jean Tardy
    Pre-Arrival
($123.95) 91-93 Points from Allen Meadows, who writes: "(from vines located in the sub-climat Les Treux). Generous but less obvious wood influence frames the red berry and raspberry liqueur nose that is followed by earth, intense and chewy full-bodied flavors that are textured, concentrated and mouth coating, particularly on the robust and very firm finish that offers excellent length. This is a big wine of impressive dimensions if not necessarily much finesse." (Burghound, 01/07) This Climat is North of Vosne Romanee Les Suchots, near the Grand Maupertuis upper portion of the Clos de Vougeot. This wine is not yet available, & is sold on a pre-arrival basis. We will notify you on arrival.

  • 2005
Nuits St Georges, Au Bas de Combes, Domaine Jean Tardy
    Pre-Arrival
($44.99) 87-90 Points and a Key Buy from Allen Meadows: "(from 50+ year old vines). Strong reduction blocks the nose though the flavors are rich, full and notably sweet with a textured mid-palate and superior concentration with, interestingly enough, finer tannins than those of the Athets. A wine of finesse though one that doesn’t lack for punch on the spicy finish." (Burghound, 01/07) This wine is not yet available, & is sold on a pre-arrival basis. We will notify you on arrival.

  • 2005
Nuits St. Georges, Les Boudots, 1er Cru, Domaine Jean Tardy
    Pre-Arrival
($64.99) 90-92 Points from Allen Meadows, who also picks it as a Key Buy, and writes: "(from 70 year old vines). An expressive nose of almost exclusively black and blue fruits and an array of spices that suggest Vosne as much as fine Nuits yet the Nuits character of pungent earth and a distinct animale component is on parade on the mouth coating, textured and sweet big-boned flavors, underpinned by firm tannins that are tamed by the serious dry extract levels that drench the palate on the serious but delicious finish." (Burghound, 01/07) This wine is not yet available, & is sold on a pre-arrival basis. We will notify you on arrival.

  • 2005
Vosne Romanée, Les Chaumes, 1er Cru, Domaine Jean Tardy
    Pre-Arrival
($64.99) 89-91 from Allen Meadows: "A beautifully ripe and nicely elegant nose trimmed in a deft touch of wood spice wafts from the glass to reveal more robust and bigger flavors that offer good richness and sweetness on the concentrated, velvety and mouth coating finish. This is very well balanced and a lovely mix of refinement and punch." (Burghound, 01/07) This wine is not yet available, & is sold on a pre-arrival basis. We will notify you on arrival.

  • 2005
Vosne Romanée, Vigneux, Domaine Jean Tardy
    Pre-Arrival
($47.99) Allen Meadows writes: "(this vineyard is situated on the north side of the village next to Bas Maizières and is the only separately declared example of which I am aware). Spicy red and black fruit aromas nuanced by hints of earth and smoke lead to supple, forward and almost easy flavors that are not as concentrated but retain a fine sense of detail and finishing complexity. This is very primary at present and will need a year or two to find its center." (Burghound, 01/07) This wine is not yet available, & is sold on a pre-arrival basis. We will notify you on arrival.

  • 2006 Cotes de Provence St. Roch Les Vignes Rosé ($11.99)

France - Rhone Valley

  • 2000 Cotes du Ventoux, Chateau Pesquie "Quintessence" - 4 available ($19.99) 92 points Robert Parker: "The estate’s top cuvee, the 2000 Quintessence, is amazing stuff! A formidably endowed, inky purple offering, it is full-bodied, dense, chewy, and loaded with broodingly backward, thick flavors of blackberries, cherries, and licorice. This blend of old vine Grenache (60%) and Syrah (40%) is an unctuously-textured, gorgeously thick, rich effort that represents the essence of this property’s vineyards. It should hit its stride in 1-2 years, and last for 10-12, possibly longer. It held up three days without any fruit deterioration." (06/03)

  • 2005
    Gigondas Chateau de Saint Cosme
($29.99) 90-92 points Robert Parker: "The 2005 Gigondas has good structure, low pH, and a nice acid profile. Deep ruby/purple with notes of flowers, blueberries, and black fruits, the wine is rich, heady, and best given 2-3 years of cellaring and drunk over the following 10-12 years." (02/07)

  • 2005
Gigondas Chateau de Saint Cosme "Hominis Fides"
    - 9 available
($49.99) 94-96 points Robert Parker: "The very limited cuvee that represents less than 200 cases, but is the quintessence of Gigondas is the 2005 Gigondas Hominis Fides. Pure blackberry liqueur intermixed with violets and spice characterize this rich and heady wine. It possesses awesome concentration, great acidity, and ripe but high tannins. This wine will probably shut down once bottled and not be at its best for 3-4 years then last for 15 or more. It is a tour de force in Gigondas." (02/07)

  • 2005
Gigondas Chateau de Saint Cosme "Valbelle"
($49.99) 92-94 points Robert Parker: "The dark purple-colored 2005 Gigondas Valbelle has fabulous intensity, beautiful floral and blackberry notes intermixed with licorice, smoke, and a hint of pain grille. The wine has sensational texture and a full-bodied mouthfeel. A stunningly long finish lasts just over 40 seconds. Readers should keep in mind that the young, talented proprietor Louis Barruol produces negociant wines under the label Saint-Cosme. and all the estate wines appear under the label Chateau Saint-Cosme." (02/07)

  • 2006 Dr. Heyden Oppenheimer Sacktrager Spätlese ($15.99) Apple and citrus fruit commingle on the nose of this outstanding-value Riesling. On the palate, the vibrant fruit is at the fore, while a note of minerality along with rich apricot add interest and complexity. A touch of sweetness on the palate, the impression is one of freshness and fruit, beyond all else.

  • 2005
Dr. Pauly Bergweiler Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese ($34.99) 96 points Wine Spectator: "This is a notch up in concentration, combining apricot, lime and vanilla flavors with honey and spice from botrytis. So rich, like apples simmered in brown sugar and cinnamon, yet there's a submerged structure that makes itself known on the finish. Best from 2009 through 2030. 300 cases made." (04/07)

    Mönchhof Erdener Prälat Auslese
    - 12 available
($36.99) This Auslese will need some time to unwind, but when it does, look out. The Prälat has a finer underlying structure than the Würzgarten Auslese. It is viscous, with a creamy mouth feel, great texture, very elegant in style. Picked at 140 Öchsle, it is BA like in form. More yellow fruit characteristics in '06 than the tropical notes found in previous vintages. Cassis, red and yellow peach fruit mix with lime citrus profiles.

  • 2005
    Mönchhof Mosel Slate Spätlese
    - 11 available
($17.99) 90 points Wine Spectator: "Soft and succulent, with enough acidity to keep the apricot and mandarin orange flavors focused and lingering. Deceptive in its structure. Delicate. Drink now through 2015." (02/07)

Italy

  • 2000 Alberto Serenelli Rosso Conero "Varano" ($64.99) Rosso Conero is not a well known appellation, which may cause some people to balk at the price of this Italian red, people who wouldn't think twice, perhaps, of spending upwards of sixty bucks on a Brunello, perhaps, or Barolo. But this very fine wine deserves attention from precisely those wine drinkers who pride themselves on knowing the difference between quality and cache. Rosso Conero is a tiny appellation, and it consists of a special soil and microclimate found nowhere else on the Italian peninsula. This wine, and all the Rosso Conero wines made at Serenelli, is 100% montepulciano. The "Varano" is made only in very special years, however, and it is the crown jewel in this winery's very high quality portfolio. Its bouquet offers morello cherries mixed with an intriguing note of tar. And its palate is full of seemingly contrasting flavors of cranberry, cedar and ripe plum. Enjoy with grilled sausages, red meat or pasta in a rich ragu.

  • 2004
Antinori Tignanello ($79.99) 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2004 Tignanello (85% Sangiovese, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc) presents a livelier shade of ruby along with fresher aromatics and flavors. Deeply expressive, it reveals black cherries, licorice, tar and sweet toasted oak on a linear, silky-textured frame of great class and elegance, showing outstanding presence on the palate and fine tannins to round out the finish. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2019." (06/07)

  • 2002
Benanti Rosso di Verzella ($22.99) 1 Glass Gambero Rosso! From 40-year-old nerello mascalese vineyards, this ruby red wine, grown on the lunar-like slopes of Mt. Etna, offers a richly fruited aroma with notes of vanilla and layers of red and black fruits, while on the palate it is long and supple, with firm tannin and amazing persistence.

  • 2001
    Benanti Rovitello
    - 11 available
($46.99) 2 Glasses Gambero Rosso! The mainstay of this region is the nerello mascalese grape, and nowhere is this variety put to better use than at the Benanti estate, where it plays the central role in this wine, Rovitello. It is a sweet grape when ripe, but is also fiercely tannic. In this wine it is blended with a small amount of nerello cappuccino, to soften the tannins and add richness. This red is matured in small oak casks for more than one year and in bottle for 8 to 10 months before release, and when it is released into your glass, you will be blown away by its ethereal scent, with intensity and delicate hints of vanilla, chestnut flowers and oak. On the palate, it is elegant, reasonably tannic and remarkably persistent. One of the great reds of the region to be sure!

  • 2005
Bibi Graetz Casamatta Bianco ($8.99) With a super fragrant nose exploding with fresh nectarine, grassy notes, sage, rosemary and lime, this 100% Vermentino aged in stainless steel is crisp and refreshing, loaded with citrus and hints of peach. This is an outstanding effort at an incredibly affordable price.

  • 2004
    Bibi Graetz Casamatta Rosso
    - 12 available
($11.99) 100% Sangiovese. According to the Wine Spectator: "Blackberry, currant and earth character follows through to a medium- to full-bodied palate, with soft tannins and a light vanilla-spice aftertaste. Best after 2006." (10/06)

  • 2004
Bibi Graetz Soffocone di Vincigliata IGT
    - 11 available

  • 2005
    Edge Napa Cabernet Sauvignon ($16.99)

United States - Domestic Chardonnay

  • 2004 Dierberg Santa Maria Valley Chardonnay ($36.99) Made using age-old techniques, the Dierberg Santa Maria Valley Chardonnay enjoyed an even growing season in 2005, creating grapes with high acid and ripe flavors. The grapes were pressed whole cluster and fermented, on the lees, in barrel, depending on native yeasts for as much of the process as possible. The resulting wine is fresh, with zippy acidity and full citrus impressions on the palate and citrus, tropical and hazelnuts on the nose. Tightly structured, this wine will benefit from a few years in the cellar.

  • 2006
    Flora Springs Chardonnay, Napa Valley
($19.99) With 26 years experience making some of the Napa Valley's most exquisite Chardonnays, Flora Springs releases another gem. Made from a blend of fruit grown at select vineyard sites in the Napa Valley, including Oakville, Carneros and vineyards on the Napa River between Rutherford and St. Helena. Lush tropical flavors emerge from the fruit grown on the valley floor, while the long finish is carried by the bright acidity of the Carneros fruit.

  • 2004
    Kongsgaard "The Judge" Napa Chardonnay
    - 6 available
($350.00) 98 points Robert Parker: "The 2004 Chardonnay The Judge is about as fine a Chardonnay as one is likely to find in the world. The wine, as one might expect, is from the same vineyard and simply the most concentrated barrels of what is already a very concentrated wine. It just has more of everything when compared to the regular 2004 Chardonnay, but I think the most striking thing is that, from what I can tell, he is looking for even more intense minerality in the wine, and this wine certainly offers it in spades. It should age for up to a decade." (12/06) 95 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: " Wilder, more reduced nose than the 2005, with notes of mocha, smoke and nutty oak. Then broad, dry and full: this is almost too big for the mouth. This glyceral-thick chardonnay boasts staggering volume, but in spite of its almost exotic thickness and tropical fruit notes, I'd still like to put this in a blind tasting of top grand cru Burgundies. The wine's solid mineral underpinning began to express itself with aeration" (May/June 07)

  • 2003
    Ramey "Hudson" Carneros Chardonnay
    - 4 available
($49.95) 94 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Pale yellow-green color. Wonderfully complex nose offers lime, peach, iodine, minerals, vanilla cream, truffle, smoke, hazelnut and earth. Sweet and lush yet light on its feet; this is actually the lowest in residual sugar of these vineyard-designated chardonnays, though all of them are under one gram per liter. Intriguing notes of biscuit and caramel. Saline and soil-inflected wine, with a long, chewy finish." (May/June 06) 92 points Robert Parker: "The 2003 Chardonnay Hudson exhibits notes of tropical fruits, lemons, oranges, and tangerines, medium to full body, and a lusty, heady, extroverted style that is unmistakably California in orientation. Ramey kindly did a vertical of his two single-vineyard Chardonnays from the Hyde and Hudson Vineyards, and it was interesting that the Hudson aged quickly and was beginning to fade after 2-3 years, but the Hyde wines, even the oldest one, the 1996, were fresh and superb. David Ramey also has a successful consulting business. His list of clients includes the likes of Benziger, Saracina, Dierburg, Niebaum-Coppola, Lancaster, Audellsa, Landmark, Snowden, Rodney Strong, and Manoogian." (12/05) 90 points Wine Spectator: "Full-bodied yet with understated flavors built around creamy fig, apricot and melon. The flavors build on the finish, revealing good complexity and concentration and finishing with a long, intricate aftertaste. Drink now through 2008. 830 cases made." (07/06)

  • 2004 Burgess Napa Merlot ($14.99) 90 points Wine News: " Reserved, dusty aromas of black fruit, coffee bean and clove with touches of smoke and coconut. Gritty flavors of plum, black cherry, minerals, bittersweet chocolate and iodine are more expressive than suggested by the nose. Silky close." This release, from Napa's Burgess Cellars is 100% Estate grown Merlot from the winery's Oak Knoll vineyards just south of Yountville. The vines are oriented to take advantage of both morning and afternoon sun, making for a concentrated, full-bodied vintage that incorporates 100% French oak to compliment the rich flavors, which often hint at the eucalyptus trees that grow alongside the vines.

  • 2005
Aubin Cellars "Verve" Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir ($26.99)

  • 2005
Campion Central Coast Pinot Noir ($22.99) The 2005 growing season was an unusual one—the early spring seemed to be normal enough—then winter returned with and persisted into June. While the funky weather didn't destroy the grapes, it made for an interesting vintage. And while winemaker Larry Brooks worked to offset the lesser effects of the weather on the 2005 Campion Central Coast Pinot Noir, the wine still expresses the conditions. The grapes in this bottling came from the Sarmento Vineyard in the Santa Lucia Highlands and Firepeak Vineyards in the Edna Valley. The first grapes were light and aromatic while the second contributed the wine's tannic structure. The resulting wine is ruby-hued with aromas of red fruit and sage followed by bright fruit and soft tannins. Still young, this wine is subtle, terroir-driven and well suited to enjoy with food.

  • 2005

But it’s the fruit on this wine that'll wow you—refreshing watermelon and tart tangerine— the bright acidity makes this a great quaffer on its own or with your favorite finger foods. Make sure to have enough around for your next barbeque. This is sure-fired crowd pleaser.

Bodega Mendel, Malbec, Mendoza (Argentina) ($19.99) 91 points from Wine and Spirits Magazine! They say, "Crafted by Roberto de la Mota, the former winemaker at Terrazas de los Andes, this Malbec feels made for winter nights by the fireplace. It's chocolatey and full of dark cherry flavor, its firm structure needing time in the bottle or something meaty like lamb roasted with rosemary. 6/2007" 90 points Wine Spectator: "Packed with layers of crushed plum and boysenberry fruit, with exotic spice notes, this richly textured wine is carried by fresh acidity to the long, dark finish." • 2002 Clarendon Hills "Astralis" - 6 available ($289.00) 98-100 points Robert Parker: "The 2002 Syrah Astralis Vineyard is akin to midnight oil. A viscous, unctuously-textured, full-bodied wine of remarkable intensity that represents the essence of a particular varietal as well as vineyard, it will need 8-10 years before it begins to develop. It is a legendary Syrah that those lucky enough to taste in its prime (circa 2025-2035) will give the respect it most certainly will demand. Thankfully, there are people in the wine world like Roman Bratasiuk who make wines for future generations as opposed to those that offer immediate gratification. But let none of us who care about quality dismiss the purists and non-compromising winemakers such as Bratasiuk who are trying to do
