Piedra Hill Purple Label
A rare 590 cases of this wine are available. Piedra Hill is a new venture from Bill and Joan Smith, two heroes of California wine. Their success with La Jota Vineyard and later W.H. Smith Wines is well known to fans of CA's great cult wines going back to the early 80's. This new and highly collectible wine is outstanding!
2004 W.H. Smith Piedra Hill "Purple Label" Cabernet Sauvignon ($49.99)
94 points Wine Enthusiast: "The wine is owned by the Smiths, who started La Jota and known for Howell Mountain Cabernet. Judging from the last few bottlings, it’s off to a promising start. Dry, rich and balanced, fruit is the star here, with explosive blackberries and cherries, while 100% new oak adds lush layers of cedar and smoke. Fully enjoyable now, with decanting, it should enjoy a long life for at least 10 years." Joan and Bill Smith's success with Sonoma Pinot Noirs may make people forget that back in the day they founded the La Jota winery and produced some of Howell Mountain's deepest and most intense Cabernets. Well they've returned to their roots, so to speak, and K&L is proud to make the journey with them. The "Purple Label" is a premium barrel selection (think La Jota Anniversary Selection) from their Piedra Hill Vineyard that sits high atop Howell Mountain. Black currants grab your olfactory senses when you stick your nose into a glass. The aromas lead you right into a gorgeous palate of blackberries, anise and smoky white pepper. The finish is long and lush with soft tannins rounding off the edges. This wonderful Howell Mountain Cabernet blend is a testament to Joan and Bill's vineyard management and winemaking abilities. Bravo! (Chip Hammack, K&L Hollywood)
