It takes a lot of beer to keep the wine business running smoothly. Here in Redwood City, we are very fortunate to have a great English style ale producer right in our backyard: Freewheel Brewing Company. The staff of K&L are fictures at our local pub, and it is a rare moment when one of us isn't there having a pint and a bite of their excellent food. We are also lucky enough to be the first place to offer their bottled beer for sale. If you have never had it, the Freewheel Brewing "FSB" Freewheel Special Bitter, California (500ml) is the benchmark in fresh, balanced, smashable ale. We will do our best to keep some in stock for you, the customer too!

If I Could Buy Two Cases of Wine...

About four weeks ago I decided to put a spending cap on my wine purchases—mainly because I was giving back too much of my salary to K&L, but also because I already have way too much wine that needs to be opened. Unfortunately for me, all of my favorite wines decided to land this week and make their way into our inventory. Working here at the Redwood City store has become an endurance challenge to see how long I can go without giving in. These bottles are laughing at me and just begging to be brought home every time I pass by them. It's serious work to resist the urge so I thought I would write about them and hope that it would alleviate this intense desire to spend! Maybe by informing our customers about some of the new arrivals I'm excited about, it will quell this almost irresistible feeling. Let's hope it does. Here is a list of all the insanely good wines that have just docked and are now lining our shelves: 2006 La Fortuna Rosso di Montalcino ($23.99) This is one of the first wines I remember really being amazed by when I started working here last year. The red fruit and the richness of the wine are simply amazing and needs to be tasted to be believed. La Fortuna makes good wine and only good wine. Most of our local customers are familiar with them, but if you are reading this from outside the area, do not miss out. I am so thankful to Greg St. Clair and Mike Parres for bringing in this wine for us. Speaking of La Fortuna..... 2004 La Fortuna "Fortunello" ($14.99) I was not here to taste this wine last year, but I heard about it nonstop from my co-workers. When we finally got it in stock last week I bought half a case just on reputation. Luckily it lived up to the hype. About 90% sangiovese and 10% merlot, this wine is dangerously good with ripe red berry fruit and a remarkably deep and balanced palate. I'll be surprised if the staff doesn't buy most of it. 2007 Louvetrie Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Hermine d'Or ($14.99) Again, now having been at K&L for about a year, I am seeing new vintages of my old favorites come back into stock. These are exciting times and Jo Landron is a producer who I get excited about. His muscadets are exquisitely distinguished in their mildness. I think of muscadet as the wine that takes a backseat to my seafood dishes, so as not to overpower their delicate flavors. Landron, however, sees no reason why he can't make a complex expression nonetheless. This vintage has peach, lime, and zippy acid. Parker even joined in the mix this year rating it 89 points. 2007 Clos Roche Blanche Touraine Sauvignon Blanc # 2 ($15.99) Anyone who has read the recent books by Neal Rosenthal or Alice Feiring should be familiar with this producer. The vineyards of Clos Roche Blanche were planted at the end of the 19th century and have remained in the Roussel family since. Catherine Roussel took over this 28-hectare estate in 1975 from her father, and was later joined by Didier Barrouillet, who tends the vineyards and makes the wine. The winery has been farming organically since the 1970s, and beginning with the 1995 vintage, the winery received the official "organic agricultural" accreditation. They hand-harvest their grapes. The must is handled by gravity at all stages. The wines then ages on its lees and is bottled by gravity, by hand, without filtration to avoid mechanical manipulation that would unsettle it. With all this info, is the wine even good, you ask? Indeed it is. It's delicious. I could go on and on about all the great bottles that have recently arrived, but I don't think I'm helping myself after all. Try these out first and let me know what you think. I can't imagine any fan of Italian or Loire Valley wines not having an epiphany after a glass of any of these wines. —David Driscoll
