What We're Drinking

So why is the 2012 Ladera Cabernet—made from almost entirely from Howell Mountain fruit, from an incredible vintage—sitting pretty at $34.99? I honestly can't tell you. Maybe it's because no one knows how good the Ladera holdings in Howell Mountain are. Or maybe it's the pride that winemaker Jade Barrett takes in making a serious wine for a reasonable price. Or maybe it's because Ladera is an overlooked gem in a sea of Napa alternatives. For whatever the reason, I'm not going to complain. We tasted the 2012 vintage at our staff training yesterday and I was just floored by the quality of this wine. Dark, fleshy fruit cloaked in fine tannins, bits of earth, and in total balance, with enough gusto to go the long haul in your cellar. It's a whole lotta wine for $34.99, and it's made primarily from Howell Mountain grapes, harvested during a great vintage.

Directeur Commercial Bourgogne

Hello Burgundy Lovers,

I wanted to let you know that our limited supply of 2009 Groffier Burgundies are here, and available on-line or by calling us.

As Antonio Galloni writes in Parker’s Wine Advocate: “This is a beautiful set of wines from Groffier. The estate farms eight hectares of vineyards, all of which it owns. The fruit receives a cold soak prior to fermentation that accounts for much of the trademark perfume these wines show. The 2009s were bottled between mid-December, 2010 and mid-January 2011.”

2009 Domaine Groffier Bourgogne Passetoutsgrains, Price: $23.99

2009 Domaine Groffier Bourgogne Rouge Price: $39.99

89 points in Parker's Wine Advocate "The 2009 Bourgogne is made from parcels in Vougeot and Morey, approximately 2/3 and 1/3 respectively. It is a sexy wine laced with radiant fruit, expressive aromatics and a generous personality. The Bourgogne is a great introduction to the house style. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2019. "

2009 Domaine Groffier Gevrey-Chambertin Price: $73.99

89+ from Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2009 Gevrey-Chambertin is a somewhat ethereal, fleeting wine. Still, there is plenty to admire in the feminine fruit and weightless, perfumed finish."  ."

2009 Domaine Groffier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru "Hauts Doix" Price: $139.95

92 Points from Steve Tanzer:: "The 2009 Chambolle-Musigny Les Hauts-Doix floats from the glass with plenty of Chambolle character. Red berries, flowers and sweet spices come together beautifully in this sleek, impeccably crafted Burgundy. The finish is delicate, understated and totally sensual. This is a gorgeous wine from Groffier. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2029. "  92 Points from Parker's Wine advocate: "The 2009 Chambolle-Musigny Les Hauts-Doix floats from the glass with plenty of Chambolle character. 2009 Domaine Groffier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru "Les Sentiers" Price: $149.95

92+ Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2009 Chambolle-Musigny Les Sentiers presents the more intense side of Chambolle. Layers of dark fruit emerge from this muscular, deep wine. There is fabulous richness in the glass, along with some of the sheer structure that is typical of Bonnes Mares, the vineyard that sits just above. The Sentiers seems built for the long haul. Knockout aromatics linger on the finish."

2009 Domaine Groffier Bonnes Mares Grand Cru Price: $259.95

95+ points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2009 Bonnes Mares opens with knockout aromatics that meld into layers of fresh, vibrant fruit. Medium in body yet wonderfully intense in its flavors, the Bonnes Mares impresses for its class and balance. An array of dark fruit, minerals, violets and white flowers linger on the pointed, saline finish. Groffier’s vines in Bonnes Mares sit on a slope with both terres rouges and terres blanches. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2039."

A Santé,

-Keith
