Greetings all,

While we are not selling Lopez de Heredia Viña Tondonia Reserva for $20 (though, curiously, a colleague mentioned that Maria José Lopez de Heredia was recently interviewed on NPR) we are selling another classic, single vineyard wine made from a vineyard literally one Rio Ebro stone's throw over: Viña Pomal.

Bodegas Bilbainas has been producing the Viña Pomal Reserva since 1932. It is all Tempranillo from a beautiful calcareous clay vineyard site in Haro. It's aged 18 months in American oak, and then another 18 months in bottle (though at this point both wines below have obviously aged considerably longer). Both of these are from terrific vintages in 2004 and 2005, and would make for a delicious accompaniment to any of your favorite winter stews and braises. They are wines with great material, rich fruit, well integrated spicy barrel notes, balanced acidity, earthy savor and an unmistakable Rioja Alta minerality. These wines are also known to age well- I will be grabbing some of each to experiment.

2005 Bodegas Bilbainas Viña Pomal Reserva Rioja - $19.99 http://www.klwines.com/detail.asp?sku=1084698

Greetings all,

Short and to the point offer today for some extremely limited wines.....

Most anyone who has an open mind and a knowledge of fine wine has some familiarity with Equipo Navazos. What can be said about these Sherries that hasn't already been mentioned in the press and by wine lovers of all types? From professional Champagne writers to leading Spanish journalists, younger restaurant wine buyers to more seasoned collectors, Equipo Navazos has earned praise for days and extra days. These are not only some of Spain's best wines, but the best bottlings are paradigm shifting examples of their style, and make ideal, cerebral introductions to the delicious, if complicated and challenging, world of Sherry.

Equipo Navazos consists of a partnership between Jesús Barquin and Eduardo Ojeda. The proprietors use their connections in the Sherry trade to pick some of their favorite barrels from a small group of top bodegas. These barrels are then bottled with the lightest of filtrations, and the resulting wines are truly outstanding and distinctive versions of their respective style. They are also capable of improving with bottle age. I love both of these wines, though it's the manzanilla pasada (in its earlier #10 iteration) which has been amongst my favorite wines of all time. Both of these, though, are awesome and have my highest recommendation.

91 points from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2010 Malbec was sourced from three vineyards, two of which are 66 and 86 years of age, with the wine aged for 9 months in French oak. It is a super-fragrant offering featuring racy red fruits, spice box, incense, and floral notes. Pure, sweetly-fruited, and elegant in the glass, this intense, lengthy Malbec can be approached now and over the next 6-8 years." (Dec 11) According to the Wine Spectator: "This lovely red displays aromas of violet and crushed raspberry, following through to a medium-bodied palate, which lingers with a pleasant aftertaste of licorice and mint. Drink now. 9,000 cases imported." (10/11)

Achaval Ferrer is one of Argentina's top Malbec producers. Produced from Malbec sourced from vineyards located in Mayor Drummond, La Consulta and Medrano sub-zones of the huge Mendoza region, this blend of distinctive terroirs is just one element of detail that distinguishes Achaval Ferrer's Malbec from others. -Joe Manekin, K&L South American Wine Buyer

93 points from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2009 Quimera is a blend of 40% Malbec, 22% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Cabernet Franc, and 4% Petit Verdot with yields averaging a minuscule 1.3 tons per acre. The wine was aged in 40% new French oak. Pain grille, pencil lead, Asian spices, incense, violets, and assorted black fruits inform the nose of a complex, intense, layered, spicy, succulent wine with impeccable balance and length. Although it can be approached now, it will benefit from another 2-3 years of cellaring." (12/11)

This blend seems softer, less brash, more elegant this vintage than it has been in the past couple. Tangy mixed berry fruits show loads of freshness and the usually elegant Achaval Ferrer texture in the mouth. -Joe Manekin, K&L South American Wine Buyer

2009 Achaval Ferrer "Finca Mirador" Malbec Mendoza ($89.99)

96 points from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2009 Finca Mirador was sourced from vines planted in 1921 and yields of 0.9 tons per acre. A glass-coating opaque purple color, it sports a captivating nose of sandalwood, exotic spices, espresso, lavender, black cherry, and black raspberry. Layered on the palate with a velvety texture, it conceals enough structure to evolve for at least 3-4 years. This nicely proportioned effort will deliver prime drinking from 2015 to 2029." (12/11) 90 points Wine Spectator: "Aromas and flavors of fresh crushed raspberry, blackberry, violet and graphite expand on the palate, which remains fresh and focused as medium tannins add support to the finish. Malbec. Drink now through 2016. 300 cases imported." (10/11)

Intense purple fruited aromas, show a hint of the exotic, with some dusty cumin notes adding interest. Intense, tight fruit on the palate shows the usual hallmarks of this vineyard site: purple fruit, loads of acidity and minerality. As ever, this particular Malbec shows an elegance and structure reminiscent of Burgundy - particularly the Cotes de Nuits. A must have Malbec for fans of the variety and admirers of wine from Argentina. -Joe Manekin, K&L Latin Wine Buyer

98 points from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2009 Finca Bella Vista was sourced from a vineyard planted in 1910 giving a miserly yield of 0.75 tons per acre. It displays slightly blacker fruit, a bit more depth and opulence, and a finish that seems endless. Give it 5-6 years of cellaring and enjoy it from 2016 to 2029+." (12/11)

Aromas of spicy, pure red fruits, with a dried fruit leather quality, lead to a similarly spicy palate. This is a special vineyard site, featuring very old vines and yields that are less than a ton per acre. Of all Achaval Ferrer's wines, this one will often age the best, capable of improving in bottle for a decade or more. - Joe Manekin, K&L Latin Wine Buyer

Greetings all,

Let's start off by thanking everyone who made it to our tastings this past Saturday. The first tasting of the year can be a tough one to guage - will people turn out, excited to once again have a Saturday tasting after a few weeks without one? Or perhaps people would want to take it easy after the holidays?

Well, as it turned out a lot of people wanted to taste some wines from Rioja and Ribera del Duero. And, since we only have the opportunity to do this a few times a year, we had the chance to open some good bottles: 1996 Viña Sastre Pagos de Santa Cruz Ribera del Duero, 1996 Bodegas Las Orcas Reserva Rioja, 1996 Finca Allende "Aurus" Rioja. In Redwood City we were fortunate to have a bottle of 1970 Viña Tondonia Blanco, a rare relic which, frankly, I was tired of passing by in the jewel rack without pulling it out and opening it for curious customers and staff.

Let's keep that Rioja feeling going this week. Based in the Rioja Alavesa town of Laguardia, Bodegas Las Orcas farms tempranillo as well as a bit of garnacha and graciano. Their wines are delicious, though at the same time they are serious and built for the long haul. Amongst tasters' favorite wines last Saturday was the 1996 Bodegas Las Orcas Reserva Rioja. At 15 years old, it has developed into a beautiful, aromatically complex, medium weight, silky wine, still showing fruit but with plenty of mushroom and sous bois notes to grab your attention. We hardly have any more of this wine left, grab some before it disappears.

People also enjoyed the younger and fruitier 2006 Bodegas Las Orcas Crianza Rioja. This is tasty now, though our experience with this wine suggests that, for those who prefer softer tannins and a bit more savory nuance, its optimal drinking period will not begin for another few years, and will continue through its 10th birthday.

Finally, the 2001 Bodegas Las Orcas Reserva Rioja is drinking great now, though it too will continue to reward cellaring.

2006 Bodegas Las Orcas Solar de Randez Crianza Rioja - $14.99 http://www.klwines.com/detail.asp?sku=1075877

Short post this week as we assess what new stuff we need after the busy season. I have a delicious, somewhat obscure pair of wine suggestions this week, from the sandy pre-phylloxera vineyards of the Colares region outside of Lisboa, Portugal. Ramisco is the grape variety, and the two wines below show a distinctive intense, ever so slightly rustic quality, paired with enough fruit and the sort of fresh profile that makes you wonder out loud: "I can't believe this is Portugal!" Not that Portugal is incapable of producing fresh, balanced, lower alcohol red wines. In fact, wines such as these help to readily disprove that point.

The first of these two wines is from relatively younger vines, with less fruit intensity but lovely balance. And the second, bottled as a 500ml, shows amazing intensity and structure. This is an example of a Colares wine which Portuguese connoisseurs collect, and that has proven to be the country's longest ageing red (I've heard of wines from the 1950's showing beautifully, something akin to a fully mature Barolo). I suppose we will have to all find out for ourselves, though.

Also, I would like to encourage you all to stop in this Saturday to Redwood City (1-4pm), San Francisco (12-3pm) or Hollywood (3-5:30pm) for a Rioja and Ribera del Duero focused tasting. Without mentioning specific wines (the line-ups are different in each store) I will say that the two northern California tastings will have some very cool mini horizontals from both regions, featuring traditional as well as modern producers. It's always fun to taste with an open mind, compare the different styles, and possibly dispel any prejudices you may have (I do, admittedly, have some about these wines myself). In Hollywood, the line-up has a bit more Rioja, and will show the amazing range of styles in the region, while showing a few great examples of Ribera del Duero as well. The Tempranillo grape is the focus, so come in and see how different "terruño" as well as cellar technique affects the profile of these classic Spanish wines.

Un saludo,

Joe

Hello Burgundy Lovers,

Happy New Year to you all!

Lots of folks think of red wines and port this time of year. But oysters are in season and delicious, and Dungeness Crab is on everyone’s mind on the West Coast. And for both of these delicacies, my preference is a crisp Chablis, with that bracing acidity and minerality that is the hallmark of this cool-climate, Kimmeridgian soil based terroir.

And one of the masters in Chablis is Christian Moreau. We have a number of his wines to offer, but all in limited quantities, as always.

The vintage-inspired bottle shape is eye-catching, but what’s inside the bottle is truly brilliant. From Mesnil, the southernmost Grand Cru in Champagne (home to Salon and Krug’s Clos de Mesnil), it has a crisp, mineral-driven nose, with subtle lees and butter undertones and a hint of fennel.

Happy New Year, everyone!

Hopefully no one minded (or had time to notice) the radio silence during the past few weeks. We had what was easily our busiest holiday season, and are enjoying the steady, but much less frenzied and high pressure week between Christmas and NYE. If you have some time to see us and need to stock up on anything - Cava, Sherry, Rioja, Champagne, beer, Muscadet, pineau d'aunis, whatever - come on in, we'll be happy to see you!

I thought that I would take a (temporary) hiatus from the sales pitch (sort of), and instead use this email to wish you all the best for 2012. Here are just a few things we're looking forward to next year:

- Hosting our new Riojano friend Miguel Merino, likely in March. We will surely have a few events featuring Miguel and these delicious direct imports, so stay tuned. Also, please be sure to check out our interview with him in our February newsletter.

- Adding some new direct imports from Rioja and perhaps further afield. One in particular I'm very excited about; we've had the wines in the past and will soon be their exclusive US importers.

- Continuing to spread the Sherry gospel. Maybe a direct import here as well?

- Tasting the good stuff with you all. To that point, our first tasting of the year (Redwood City, San Francisco and Hollywood) will focus on some of the classics from Rioja and Ribera del Duero, and will be Saturday January 7th so mark your calendars! Just a heads up, this tasting may be a fancy one (in terms of wines, not price!) We might could pop open some fine vintages to get folks out the first week in January. You should check it out. Check K&L Local Events for more details: http://www.klwines.com/local_events.asp#5

Thanks for all of your support in 2011, and best wishes for the New Year.

Saludos,

Hey everyone,

This week we are focused on one thing and one thing only: the special Bodegas Riojanas tasting with Luis Moya of Vinos Unico this Friday at 5pm in our Redwood City store. In addition to having some delicious tapas prepared courtesy of Chef Raquel Hermosilla of Spain at Home Catering, we will be featuring a full line-up of Bodegas Riojanas wines, including the '78 Viña Albina and legendary '64 Monte Real Gran Reservas. Those two bottles alone, if they were for sale (they're not, we're pouring them just for fun and educational purposes) would likely go for $200 each.

The price of the tasting is only $8.

Here is the line-up:

2004 Bodegas Riojanas Viña Albina Reserva Rioja - $19.99

Greetings from Iberilandia,

Let's talk turkey. We've got some new stuff that I think would make terrific turkey day wine. Also, our last Vibrant Rioja Thursday tasting to look forward to this Thursday in Redwood City. Finally, we have some new sherries – one everyday Manzanilla as well as a few special occasion/collectible things from Equipo Navazos.

1.) Thanksgiving wines

I have found that Albariño works wonderfully with the Thanksgiving meal. The wine's ripe, juicy fruit seems to complement nearly everything on the table, and the acidity invigorates your palate and keeps you focused on the most important business of the holiday: eating.

2010 Carballal Albariño Rias Baixas - $14.99

http://www.klwines.com/detail.asp?sku=1072339

2009 Do Ferreiro Albariño Rias Baixas - $24.99

http://www.klwines.com/detail.asp?sku=1065195

Rioja is my default Thanksgiving red (to satisfy the French side of my euro inclined palate, I'll usually pick a good Beaujolais as well). There is something about the generosity of Rioja's fruit and the gently balanced acidity which just works great at table, whether you're going Spanish style with lamb and roasted potatoes or American style with turkey and mashed spuds.

2007 Bodegas Puelles Crianza Rioja - $15.99

http://www.klwines.com/detail.asp?sku=1072531

2001 Señorio de Peciña Reserva Rioja - $29.99

http://www.klwines.com/detail.asp?sku=1069149

2001 Señorio de Peciña Reserva Rioja (1.5L) – $59.99

http://www.klwines.com/detail.asp?sku=1079798

Finally, my pick for something a bit different. Think of this as one of Spain's best winemaker's response to Beaujolais.

2010 Bodegas y Viñedos Ponce "Clos Lojen" Manchuela - $15.99

http://www.klwines.com/detail.asp?sku=1078214

2.) New Sherries

How about a fresh, recently bottled Manzanilla?

La Guita Manzanilla Sanlucar de Barrameda - $14.99

http://www.klwines.com/content.asp?&N=0&Nr=OR%28OutofStock%3AN%2CInventory+Location%3ASpecial+Order%29&Ns=QtySoldLast30%7C1

And, some rare, rare wines, for the collector with a sweet tooth.

Equipo Navazos La Bota de Pedro Ximenez #11 Jerez - $79.99

http://www.klwines.com/detail.asp?sku=1079258

Equipo Navazos La Bota de Pedro Ximenez #12 Montilla Moriles - $79.99

http://www.klwines.com/detail.asp?sku=1079267

3.) Vibrant Rioja

Join us in Redwood City tomorrow (Thursday 11/17) for our final Vibrant Rioja tasting (featuring all Reservas and Gran Reservas!) 5-6:30pm. $5 RSVP and/or invite friends, or roll solo - it's going to be well worth the $5.
