Spanish & Portuguese News 11/2/11: Bodegas y Viñedos Ponce

Alright, we're back at it and at 'em in November!  We've had our first few nights with a Fall chill in the air (well, Autumnal chill by Bay Area standards) and you know what that means - you need to be drinking more wines from Jerez.  But we'll circle back to that suggestion in the weeks ahead.

For now let's talk about some RIOJA events and then our featured winery for the week, the spectacular Bodegas y Viñedos Ponce.

1.) Tasting Events

We will be pouring the whole array of wines we carry from this historic centenarian Rioja bodega.  These wines are truly special, capable of long ageing in bottle, and possessing an uncanny ability to go with food.  To prove this latter point, we will be providing some Spanish snacks !  $8

2.) Bodegas y Viñedos Ponce

To say that the wines from Juan Antonio Ponce are delicious, impeccably made, intensely soulful and vastly different from 99.99% of Spain's other red wines would be an understatement.  Ponce's point of view about his wines is simple:  indigenous varieties, intensive proactive biodynamic vineyard work (with minimal copper sulphate treatments, of course), native yeast fermentations in foudres, ageing in used oak barrels, and adding the least amount of SO2 as possible.  We have his full range of reds; they all are highly recommended.

3.) The one token white wine

I know that we are no longer in prime txakoli drinking season, but the new one below was just too good to pass up!  It's a style totally different from our others - extended lees ageing, bottle ageing, and as a result a wine that still shows terrific acidity and minerality, with mouthwatering, expansive fruit.
