What We're Drinking

With the James Bond movie Spectre being released today, no time could be better to drink Bollinger. The most suave spy in the world has been sipping on Bollinger since Moonraker in 1979. While we can’t all drive a fully loaded, customized machine gun having Aston Martin, we certainly can chill down a bottle of Bolli! The 2004 Bollinger "Grande Année" Brut Champagne ($109) is as good as Champagne gets; all barrel fermented and full of masculine, Pinot Noir power and high class elegance. We even have a few bottles of the limited 2009 Bollinger "James Bond 007" Brut Champagne ($195) in stock for the diehard fan of Bond & Champagne!

Spanish & Portuguese News 2/23/12: Taste the Wine of Bodegas Y Viñedos Ponce

By: Joe Manekin

K&L Spanish & Portuguese Wine Buyer

Good afternoon, everyone,

Just two things to mention this week:

Our Friday tasting in Redwood City will feature some of the most exciting wines in Spain, those of Bodegas y Viñedos Ponce.  Working primarily with organically farmed, old vine Bobal in the D.O. of Manchuela (a few hours SE of Madrid), Ponce has quickly built up a reputation in Spain as being one of the most talented and serious vignerons in the entire country.  Here are some other producers that his bottlings occasionally remind me of:  Jean Foillard, Chateau Pradeaux, and Domaine Gramenon.  OK, now that we got your attention, get over to Redwood City tomorrow at 5pm

Tasting lineup and details:

If you can't make it, then you still really need to try these wines.  Read more, here.

As for wines of the week, my thoughts this week are why not keep it simple?  Just one wine ought to do it.  What a wine, though! If you're a fan of Riojas from Lopez de Heredia, Peciña, La Rioja Alta, Riojanas, etc, then I'm nearly certain you will love it.

Spain has a long history of producing fine wines and You will find many establishments in Spain offer excellent quality menus for around 6 to 10 Euros, some of which ( mostly those catering for the local clientele ) will even include a bottle of wine for two persons. the wine enthusiasts will be given the cheaper kinds which will probably taste better when mixed with a litte lemonade ( Casera ).50 percent of all the EECs vineyards are located in RIoja and it offers an excellent and memorable selection of Reds, White and Rose wines, which thankfully, are mostly inexpensive for the quality on offer.

Rioja ( from the yards around Logroño ) is rightly Spain's best known wine and available in most shops and restaurants , Cune, Berberana, Marques de Caceres and La Rioja Alta are also brands well worth a try. Another top-drawer and currently fashionable region is Ribera del Duero in Castilla-Leon which makes the countries most expensive wine, Vega Sicilia, other outstanding reds to look out for are Pesquera, Viña Pedrosa and Senorio de Nava.

There are also scores of other regional wines - some of the best are Navarra (Chivite, Palacio de la Vega) and Catalunya (Bach, Raimat, Caus Lubis and Alvaro Palacios).
