So why is the 2012 Ladera Cabernet—made from almost entirely from Howell Mountain fruit, from an incredible vintage—sitting pretty at $34.99? I honestly can't tell you. Maybe it's because no one knows how good the Ladera holdings in Howell Mountain are. Or maybe it's the pride that winemaker Jade Barrett takes in making a serious wine for a reasonable price. Or maybe it's because Ladera is an overlooked gem in a sea of Napa alternatives. For whatever the reason, I'm not going to complain. We tasted the 2012 vintage at our staff training yesterday and I was just floored by the quality of this wine. Dark, fleshy fruit cloaked in fine tannins, bits of earth, and in total balance, with enough gusto to go the long haul in your cellar. It's a whole lotta wine for $34.99, and it's made primarily from Howell Mountain grapes, harvested during a great vintage.

Wine Wednesday: Restoring Sanity

Saturday, October 30th marks the first-ever Rally to Restore Sanity, an anti-rhetoric, anti-belligerence attempt by comedians John Stewart and Stephen Colbert to make our political discourse a little less volatile. 

What does this have to do with wine, you ask?

We believe that good wine should be affordable to everyone, which is why we go out of our way to make sure we offer great values from all over the world. Sure, we love Cru Burgundy and Classified Growth Bordeaux as much as the next guy, but we can't afford to drink them often either.

Wine Wednesday: 2008 McKinlay Willamette Valley Pinot Noir

"Decent wine needs to be affordable," says Matt Kinne, the bearded, soft-spoken sage of McKinlay Vineyards in the Willamette Valley. "Then wine will have a chance to surpass Budweiser as the national beverage."  Of course, it also has to be good. Kinne's 2008 McKinlay Willamette Valley Pinot Noir ($16.99) is both. Made from entirely estate-grown fruit on jory and nekiah (igneous volcanic) soils at a combination of three small vineyards near his home.
