Keith's Burgundy Hotline: 3 Amazing Burgundy Horizontals at Auction

By: Keith Wollenberg | Directeur Commercial Bourgogne

Contact: keithwollenberg@klwines.com

Hello Burgundy Fans,

Live on our auctions right now, we have three meticulously put together horizontal tastings which I thought might be of particular interest to Burgundy lovers.

They all came from the temperature controlled cellar of a top collector in Colorado ski country and are in excellent condition. The most interesting thing about them is their breadth.

In a single shot you can assemble a truly impressive horizontal tasting, from one of three top vintages – 1988, 1990 or 1999.  Have a look at these three lots:

1999 Volnay "Clos des Chênes" 16-bottle Horizontal Tasting Set

Bid on this amazing Horizontal Tasting Set featuring 16 different expressions of the 1999 Volnay "Clos des Chênes" vineyard. Sixteen producers from a great vineyard in a great vintage. The vintage, 1999, is a Pinot Noir lover's dream. Ripe, plush wines with great fruit and charming character and a great potential to age. The vineyard, Clos des Chênes, is regarded as one of the best in Volnay. Composed of limestone soil on a southeast facing slope rising to 300m in the south of the Volnay appellation. Don't pass this up.

This lot contains the following items:

Auction Spotlight: 2001 Conterno Fantino "Sori Ginestra" Barolo

2001 Conterno Fantino "Sori Ginestra" Barolo. These are the actual bottles, not stock photos. It's hard to imagine that Barolo, like much of Italy, didn't have a particularly stellar reputation 30 years ago. But that all changed in 1987 when the Wine Spectator put the 1982 bottle of this wine, Conterno Fantino's "Sori Ginestra" Barolo on the cover of their esteemed magazine. The 1982 was the first vintage produced by Claudio Conterno and Guido Fantino, and the wine came from what's become an acclaimed southfacing vineyard site in Monforte, Sori Ginestra, notable for its sand and clay-like marl soils with lots of silt that are perectly suited to the delicate Nebbiolo grape. The pair of bottles in this acution lot are in excellent condition, sourced from a Bay Area collector who kept them properly stored in a temperature-controlled cellar since purchase.

These bottles come from the 2001 vintage, which the Wine Spectator describes as having produced, "Aromatic, structured and firm reds with racy character." The wine is, also according to the Wine Spectator, the "Greatest wine ever from here and the wine of the vintage." This 99-point wine was $99 upon release and sells for upwards of $150 a bottle these days.  It also received a 95-point review from Antonio Galloni at Robert Parker's Wine Advocate. Still a youngin'--this wine has more than a generation or two of life left.

Place your bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2001 Conterno Fantino "Sori Ginestra" Barolo...

Auction Spotlight: 1975 d'Yquem, Sauternes

Ladies and gentlemen, place your bids!

There are few wines more legendary than those from Château d'Yquem; it is the ne plus ultra of sweet wines and one of the most famous wines from Bordeaux. The estate's wines were already acclaimed in the late 1700s, when it is said that America's best known oenophile Thomas Jefferson wrote to acquire some. Made from Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon grapes affected by botrytis cinera, the noble rot that causes grapes to shrivel and concentrates their flavors, d'Yquems are praised for their distinctive flavors and unparalleled longevity.

The three half bottle's of d'Yquem currently available in an auction lot that closes Friday, February 25th at noon, come from the extraordinary 1975 vintage, which critic Robert Parker said "may turn out to be the greatest of the modern-day Yquems" rivaling other spectacular vintages like 1921 and 1937 when he last reviewed the wine in 1998. The wines were impeccably stored in a professional wine facility since they were first purchased and are in excellent condition. Older vintages of d'Yquem are rare, especially in such pristine condition.
