What We're Drinking

2000 Labégorce, Margaux $39.99

A great value in Bordeaux! This bottle is mature enough to drink now, but has time in hand if you want to keep it in the cellar for the future. We love it for its laid back elegance and classic balance. A must try for your next nice steak dinner.

Keith's Burgundy Hotline: New Arrivals of Comte Armand Pommard

By: Keith Wollenberg | K&L Burgundy Buyer

Hello Burgundy Lovers,

The brilliant Pommard from Benjamin Leroux at Comte Armand has just arrived.  Benjamin is now fermenting by section of the vineyard, rather than by age of vines, as he feels it better expresses terroir, and most of their “young” vines are now 20 years old.  I tasted with Ben the wine from the Northwest corner of the property, which is actually located in Grands Epenots, while the rest of the vineyard is in Petite Epenots, and the two wines were remarkably different, reflecting the different geology of the two sections.  What he is doing with this property is quite remarkable, and I commend his wines as among the best of Burgundy today.

We have tiny quantities of two wines, both of which are in-stock and available either on the web or by calling 1-800-247-5987.

2010 Domaine Comte Armand Pommard 1er Cru "Clos des Epeneaux" , $169.95

92-95 points Allen Meadows - Burghound

Don't Miss! Outstanding! The combined cuvées revealed an exceptionally fresh combination of pure and quite elegant red cherry and raspberry aromas liberally laced with warm earth and iron nuances. There is really lovely purity to the gorgeously well-detailed, intense and muscular medium weight plus flavors that brim with dry extract and a caressing mouth feel before terminating in a mouth coating and explosively long finish. This is relentlessly persistent with outstanding depth on the palate staining finish. Terrific. (8/ 2012)

93-95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

I tasted the 2010 Pommard Clos des Epeneaux from three separate lots (corresponding to different vine ages and soils within the Clos) and then in an approximate blend. The 2010 is notable for its energy and sheer class. There is a weightless elegance to the 2010 that is quite striking. The 2010 isn’t as boisterous as it can be, but this is an approximate blend, so we will have to see what happens once the wine is in bottle. In some ways, the separate lots are more exciting than the approximate blend, so there is plenty of potential. Readers who appreciate the focused, taut side of Burgundy will find much to admire. AG (2/ 2012)

92-95 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar

(I tasted the various elements of this wine, then an approximate blend; winemaker Benjamin Leroux now vinifies several cuvees by geology rather than age of vines): Good bright medium red. Captivating, highly complex aromas of redcurrant, raspberry, cherry, spices, orange zest, flowers, licorice, menthol and vanillin oak (40% new). Silky-sweet but with lovely energy and vinosity. Very suave in texture, expanding impressively on the back half and saturating the mouth with fruit and soil flavors. This classy, pliant wine shows superb balance and finishes with building, subtle length. The bottling won't take place until April, at the earliest. Incidentally, Leroux destems all of this fruit, as he believes vinification with a percentage of whole clusters makes more sense for delicate wines that need a bit more mid-palate oomph. Nor is he enamored with the idea of bottling the oldest vines bottled on their own, as he believes this wine would still be too tannic and hard when the tertiary aromas arrive after 10 or 15 years in bottle. (2/ 2012)

2010 Domaine Comte Armand Pommard 1er Cru , $96.99

91-93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2010 Pommard 1er Cru (from young vines in Clos des Epeneaux) is wonderfully cool and precise, very much in the style of the vintage. It is a beautiful, multi-dimensional wine in every way. Understated and gracious, the Pommard 1er Cru impresses for its balance and overall sense of harmony. Sweet floral notes add lift on the finish. Comte Armand’s Clos des Epeneaux remains one of the most fairly priced wines in the world considering quality that is equal or above that of many wines with much higher pedigrees on paper. Recent bottles of the 2002 and 2003 were stunning. (2/ 2012)

89-92 points Allen Meadows - Burghound

This is also exuberantly fresh and expressive with a pretty and ripe nose of primarily red currant and blue berries plus ample amounts of warm earth. There is a similar level of energy that gives a real sense of life to the detailed, pure and impressively intense flavors that possess solid phenolic ripeness and superb balance on the lasting finish. Fine quality here and worth considering. (4/ 2012)

-Keith

Keith's Burgundy Hotline: Newly Arrived Drouhin-Laroze wines

By: Keith Wollenberg | K&L Burgundy Buyer

Hello Burgundy Lovers,

The 2010 Domaine Drouhin-Laroze wines have just arrived.  This is a domaine that has really been on the rise recently, and is making very stylish and fascinating wines from some very old vineyards.  The 2010 crop was off a full 1/3 for this domaine, so supplies are extremely limited.

These wines are in-stock and available on the web, or by calling 800-247-5987.

The wines:

2010 Domaine Drouhin-Laroze Morey St. Denis $49.99

88-90 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "A discreet to the point of mute nose leads to quite finely detailed middle weight flavors that possess a seductively silky mouth feel before culminating a firm, palate coating and balanced finish. Lovely and fashioned in a very understated style." (1/2012)

2010 Domaine Drouhin-Laroze Gevrey Chambertin $51.99

88-91 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "A complex nose features red berry fruit plus herbal and floral notes along with plenty of Gevrey-style earth that continues onto the mineral-inflected, intense and relatively robust flavors. There is good verve to the complex, balanced and solidly persistent finish. A classic Gevrey built to reward medium-term cellaring." (1/2012)

2010 Domaine Drouhin-Laroze Chambolle Musigny   $74.99

89-92 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "Outstanding Top value! A background hint of wood does not diminish the appeal of the pure and graceful ripe blue berry and red currant aromas that are, not surprisingly, completely different from those of the Gevrey 1ers. There is plenty of mineral influence to the lacy and beautifully well-detailed flavors that possess really lovely balance and persistence if only moderate depth. Still, this is a really lovely effort and textbook Chambolle." (1/2012)   K&L Notes: Mostly from 1er Cru Vineyards (80% Les Baudes and 20% Les Veroilles (village))

2010 Domaine Drouhin-Laroze Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru "Clos Prieur"  $79.95

90-92 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "This offers another small step up in overall depth with a pretty and well-layered nose of both red and dark berry fruit aromas that are soil and underbrush-inflected. The rich, generous and mouth coating flavors are shaped by very fine tannins and a pure and silky texture, all wrapped in a firm, dusty and lingering finish. A wine of refinement and again, understatement." (1/2012)

2010 Domaine Drouhin-Laroze Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru "Lavaut St. Jacques"  $81.99

94 points Wine Enthusiast: "Structured, dense and packed with black fruits, this is complex wine. Yet with all of its ripeness, it offers a great line of freshness and a smoky wood flavor, with blackberry-like acidity on the finish. Age for five years or more." (11/2012)  91-93 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "Outstanding! Discreet notes of wood spice blend with ultra-fresh and airy red pinot and pungent mineral notes that also suffuse the intense, crystalline and stony medium-bodied flavors that possess a satiny mouth feel. The natural coolness of the terroir is very much in evidence as there is bracing but balanced acidi  ... Read More »

2010 Domaine Drouhin-Laroze Latricieres-Chambertin Grand Cru  : $119.95

92-94 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "A cool, pure and ultra-elegant nose of very fresh stone-infused wild and ever-so-slightly sauvage red currant and cherry aromas gives way to rich and solidly well-concentrated medium-bodied flavors that brim with both mineral and dry extract. This balanced, long and overtly austere effort is a classic Latricières and should age like one as well." (1/2012)   K&L Notes: One of teh domaine's oldest plot of vines, and it shows.

2010 Domaine Drouhin-Laroze Chapelle Chambertin Grand Cru  $119.95

91-94 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "Here too there is a bit of wood spice framing the pure, complex and solidly ripe red currant, plum and soil-inflected aromas that precede rich, full-bodied and extract-rich flavors where the shaping tannins are forced to the background on the dusty and mouth coating finish. This is an exercise in harmony and proportion with impeccable balance on the sneaky long finish." (1/2012)

2010 Domaine Drouhin-Laroze Clos Vougeot Grand Cru  $139.95

92-94 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "A slightly riper blend of red and blue pinot fruit, violets and plenty of warm earth also suffuses the rich, full-bodied and very serious broad-shouldered flavors. This enjoys an abundance of tannin-buffering dry extract that confers a sappy texture to the driving, complex and hugely long finish. This is a first-rate example of this uneven appellation and well worth considering." (1/2012)   K&L Notes: From an extremely well-situated site high in the Clos, just below Grands Echezeaux. These are some of the domaine's oldest vines.

2010 Domaine Drouhin-Laroze Bonnes Mare Grand Cru  : $145.00

92-95 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "A reserved and openly taciturn nose reluctantly reveals notes of a cool and exceptionally fresh mélange of plum and red berries that are freely cut with stone and warm earth nuances. The mouth feel is unusually refined and while there is excellent size, weight and concentration to the large-scaled flavors, the tannins are quite fine though dense and it's clear that this markedly persistent and youthfully austere effort will require plenty of cellar time. Note that while it's a minor distinction, this is not quite as austere as the Latricières. In a word,  ... Read More »

2010 Domaine Drouhin-Laroze Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru  $179.95

93-95 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "Don't Miss! A spicy, ripe, elegant and admirably pure nose offers up notes of anise, sandalwood and clove that add breadth to the floral, earth and stone-suffused aromas. There is the same superb breadth to the rich, intense and tension-filled full-bodied flavors that possess excellent power and drive on the seductively textured, muscular and classy finish. As good as the prior grands crus are, there is another dimension present here." (1/2012)  94 points Wine Enthusiast: "Powerful while still fruity, this shows acidity and notes of ripe black cherry and spice. Very structured and so  ... Read More »

Keith's Burgundy Hotline: 2006 Domaine Leroy

By: Keith Wollenberg | K&L Burgundy Buyer

Hello Burgundy Lovers,

Not sure what you are getting for Christmas?  How about a present for yourself?  I know, I know, that is not the Christmas Spirit.

But all kidding aside, I just wanted to let you know about some rare Burgundy we just received tiny quantities of, released directly by the Domaine.  These were among my favorite of the vintage from Leroy.

There is just ONE case of each, and they are live and on the web (hyperlinks below).

2006 Domaine Leroy Vosne-Romanée "Les Genaivrières" $405  (3 per person)

SKU #1117943 91 points Allen Meadows - Burghound

Here the nose is both expressive and wonderfully seductive with its spicy elegance and striking purity to the red, blue and black pinot fruit that is classic Vosne in character. The middle weight flavors possess a beguiling velvety texture yet manage to remain precise and focused on the balanced, deep and lingering finish. This and the Fremières have always been my two favorite Leroy wines at the villages level and the '06 version is an absolute knockout for what it is. (4/ 2008)

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The Leroy 2006 Vosne-Romanee Aux Genaivrieres smells darkly of blackberry, mossy forest floor, roasted meat, and decadent floral perfume. In terms of fruit freshness, though, this is bright, while also displaying a hint of tannic grit. Its lingering finish returns to the dark side, with intriguing intimations of future complexity, though only time, I think, will reveal how this wine's tannins are resolved. (12/ 2009)

Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar

Medium red. Smoky redcurrant, red cherry and sexy earth tones on the nose. Smooth and suave in the mouth, with ripe acids framing the red fruit and floral flavors. More detailed than the Nuits villages, this wine also has more middle-palate density to support its tannins. Finishes clean, firm and minerally.

2006 Domaine Leroy Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru "Les Beaux-Monts" $650 (3 per person)

SKU #1117942 95 points Allen Meadows - Burghound

*Don't Miss!* In 2006, the Beaux Monts is perhaps the one wine in the Leroy range that truly exceeds its normal level of excellence with a more elegant and higher-toned nose of anise, soy, hoisin and cinnamon that reside in the layered, cool and relatively reserved blue and black fruit aromas. The detailed, pure, energetic and driving flavors brim with minerality and are underpinned by sophisticated tannins and culminate in simply spectacular length. I love the underlying tension here and this is a stunner of a wine packed with potential but be prepared to wait. Sheer class. (4/ 2008)

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Smoked meat and dark berries on the nose of the Leroy 2006 Vosne-Romanee Les Beaux Monts lead into an expansively rich palate, on which fine-grained tannins are abundantly evident yet adeptly-integrated. The cherry-like fruit here is even sweeter, purer and has a slightly fresher edge than in the Brulees, but despite fascinating carnal and forest floor shadings, there is not quite the same mysterious complexity, at least for now. That the two wines closely resemble one another is perhaps not surprising, since Bize-Leroy explains that they represent one and the same parcel, divided between two lieux dits (12/ 2009)

93 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar

Good bright, deep red. High-pitched aromas of cherry, minerals, smoke and earth, lifted by a peppery nuance; more explosive today than the Brulees. Pure, perfumed and tightly wound, with juicy, perfectly integrated acidity giving precision and detail to the sappy fruit, mineral and floral flavors. The very long, mounting finish features thoroughly enrobed tannins. This really saturates the palate with soil tones and titillates the taste buds. (4/ 2009)
