Bruno Michel "Blanche" Brut Champagne $34.99One of our best non-vintage Champagnes, this organically grown blend of half each Chardonnay and Meunier comes entirely from Bruno Michel's estate. It has been aged for six years on the lees and shows wonderful natural toasty quality as well as incredible vibrance! This was the big hit of our most recent staff Champagne tasting and we think you will love it too.

Keith's Burgundy Hotline:

Keith Wollenberg

Directeur Commercial Bourgogne

Hello Burgundy Lovers,

I wanted to let you know that our limited supply of 2009 Groffier Burgundies are here, and available on-line or by calling us.

As Antonio Galloni writes in Parker’s Wine Advocate: “This is a beautiful set of wines from Groffier. The estate farms eight hectares of vineyards, all of which it owns. The fruit receives a cold soak prior to fermentation that accounts for much of the trademark perfume these wines show. The 2009s were bottled between mid-December, 2010 and mid-January 2011.”

2009 Domaine Groffier Bourgogne Passetoutsgrains, Price: $23.99

2009 Domaine Groffier Bourgogne Rouge Price: $39.99

89 points in Parker's Wine Advocate "The 2009 Bourgogne is made from parcels in Vougeot and Morey, approximately 2/3 and 1/3 respectively. It is a sexy wine laced with radiant fruit, expressive aromatics and a generous personality. The Bourgogne is a great introduction to the house style. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2019. "

2009 Domaine Groffier Gevrey-Chambertin Price: $73.99

89+ from Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2009 Gevrey-Chambertin is a somewhat ethereal, fleeting wine. Still, there is plenty to admire in the feminine fruit and weightless, perfumed finish."  ."

2009 Domaine Groffier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru "Hauts Doix" Price: $139.95

92 Points from Steve Tanzer:: "The 2009 Chambolle-Musigny Les Hauts-Doix floats from the glass with plenty of Chambolle character. Red berries, flowers and sweet spices come together beautifully in this sleek, impeccably crafted Burgundy. The finish is delicate, understated and totally sensual. This is a gorgeous wine from Groffier. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2029. "  92 Points from Parker's Wine advocate: "The 2009 Chambolle-Musigny Les Hauts-Doix floats from the glass with plenty of Chambolle character. 2009 Domaine Groffier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru "Les Sentiers" Price: $149.95

92+ Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2009 Chambolle-Musigny Les Sentiers presents the more intense side of Chambolle. Layers of dark fruit emerge from this muscular, deep wine. There is fabulous richness in the glass, along with some of the sheer structure that is typical of Bonnes Mares, the vineyard that sits just above. The Sentiers seems built for the long haul. Knockout aromatics linger on the finish."

2009 Domaine Groffier Bonnes Mares Grand Cru Price: $259.95

95+ points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2009 Bonnes Mares opens with knockout aromatics that meld into layers of fresh, vibrant fruit. Medium in body yet wonderfully intense in its flavors, the Bonnes Mares impresses for its class and balance. An array of dark fruit, minerals, violets and white flowers linger on the pointed, saline finish. Groffier’s vines in Bonnes Mares sit on a slope with both terres rouges and terres blanches. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2039."

A Santé,

-Keith

Wine of the Week: 2009 Domaine Anne & Arnaud Goisot Bourgogne Côtes d'Auxerre Pinot Noir ($12.99)

The Goisot Burgogne is back! I love the Goisot wines for their purity, and at such a great price their Côte d’Auxerre Pinot is a wine you should buy by the case. It opens up as soon as the cork is pulled. The nose is fragrant with cherry and strawberry aromas, and the palate is filled with beautiful cherry fruit. It has an elegant mouthfeel and finishes with some soft tannins. This is a lovely Pinot Noir for only $13! - Steve Greer, K&L Staff Member | 9-16-2011

Côtes d'Auxerre is the northerly region in Burgundy adjacent to Chablis where the cool climate and Jurassic limestone terroir combine forces to produce light-bodied, perfumed, low-alcohol (and thus very food-friendly) wines. Light, bright, and fresh, the 2009 Goisot Bourgogne Côtes d'Auxerre Pinot Noir ($12.99) -- a K&L Direct Import -- is an exceptional example of the quality and value that can be found there.

Made from 30+ year old vines, this unoaked Pinot Noir presents textbook Côtes d'Auxerre red berry and earth spice aromatics. The palate is lively and fresh but not austere, showing just-ripe fruit flavors with spicy licorice accents, thanks to the excellence of the 2009 vintage. While sometimes the red wines from this region can be quite high in tannin and lacking in fruit (after all, Auxerre is one of the most northerly sites for red wine production in the world!) there was enough sunshine in 2009 to produce the body to balance the tannins and acidity. Enjoy this charming light-bodied wine young with a variety of foods (coq au vin or bœuf bourguignon are recommended) or hold for up to 10 years and savor it with gamier dishes -- pheasant, wild duck, rabbit -- or with a creamy brie cheese.

Keith's Burgundy Hotline: Maison Ilan

Hello Burgundy Lovers,

You may have heard of the crazy guy from California who packed up his family and moved to Burgundy to make wine.  He had a profile in the New York Times and has gotten some great attention.  Ray and I talked before he went there, as he wanted to know more about Burgundy before he left, and I have been in touch with him and have visited his cuverie in Nuits to taste the wines in his cellar.

Ray Walker of Maison Ilan

We now have a small quantity of one of his 2009s available, being sold on a pre-arrival basis but due in just a week or two:

2009 Maison Ilan Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru, $175.00

This is a new project for California native Ray Walker, who fell in love with Pinot Noir from Burgundy and jumped in with both feet, moving to Burgundy, setting himself up in business, learning French and making wine, all in the space of a few very hectic months.  91-93 Allen Meadows: "A very expressive nose that is at once earthy and ripe speaks of both red and blue berry fruits laced with underbrush and a hint of the sauvage that continues onto the textured, dense and focused broad-shouldered flavors that possess excellent phenolic maturity and superb complexity and length. I like the sense of harmony and there is a generosity to the finish that is beguiling." (Burghound, 01/11)  My notes : « From the vrait (real) Charmes, higher on the hill next to Chambertin.  Shows notes of black cherry and ripe blue fruits on the nose, mixed with an earthy note.  Ripe and rich on the palate with a rich finish.”  (Keith Wollenberg, K&L Burgundy Buyer)
