What We're Drinking

2000 Labégorce, Margaux $39.99

A great value in Bordeaux! This bottle is mature enough to drink now, but has time in hand if you want to keep it in the cellar for the future. We love it for its laid back elegance and classic balance. A must try for your next nice steak dinner.

Wine of the Week: 2009 Domaine Stephane Magnien Bourgogne Passetoutgrains "Cuvée Densité" ($14.99)

*As a K&L Direct Import, we are able to bring this unique wine to you for only $14.99 - a steal! Kudos to our buyer Keith Wollenberg for securing both of the two barrels produced.

Editor's Note: We'd be remiss if we didn't suggest of a Wine of the Week that wasn't Fourth of July friendly, and this pick by Chiara Shannon hits on every level. It's affordable (check). It's barbecue friendly (check). And it has the lighter body and easy-drinking personality we crave on hot days (check). Want to know what it is? Read on.

Fans of the spectacular 2009 Beaujolais Crus, and anyone looking for an easy-drinking but complex wine for the upcoming holiday weekend, should not miss the charming Bourgogne Passetoutgrains "Cuvée Densité" from Domaine Stephane Magnien ($14.99).  As the name "Cuvée Densité" suggests, this blend of 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Gamay from Stephane Magnien* is denser and more complex than previous bottlings, really showing off the quality of the vintage.  Alluring aromas of juicy black raspberry and earth spice sing from the glass. On the palate, Pinot's bright acidity and fine tannins frame the wine, while supple Gamay fleshes things out in all the right places. At only 11.5% ABV, this is exactly the kind of wine to serve at your next summertime soirée.  We're invited, right?

Talking Turkey: Wild Mushroom Puff Pastry from Woodenhead

Editor's Note: We're going to wrap our week of Thanksgiving wine pairings and winery recipes with a savory wild mushroom puff pastry recipe from Nikolai Stez and Zina Bower at Woodenhead Vintners. Longtime favorites of the K&L staff, Woodenhead makes earthy, balanced Pinots (as well as delicious Zins and a saline, crisp French Colombard that would go great with oyster stuffing) that play harmony in this Thanksgiving duet.

Talking Turkey: Gougères from Bethel Heights

Editor's Note: Everybody celebrates Thanksgiving just a little bit differently, which is why we've been hitting up some of our winemaking friends for some of their Thanksgiving recipes and wine pairings, which we'll be featuring over the next week. This time we reached out to Mimi Dudley Casteel, the second generation at Bethel Heights Vineyard in Oregon's Eola-Amity Hills. Mimi, along with her father Ted Casteel, tends the vines that have made this winery's offerings among some of the best over the past 30+ years. Her gougères are the perfect Thanksgiving appetizer--easy to make, sophisticated and a mouthwatering match for the 2008 Bethel Heights "Estate" Chardonnay and Pinot Noir (or both).
