What We're Drinking

Château de Brézé has a long and storied history, first being mentioned in texts in 1068, lauded by King René of Anjou in the 15th century and served at all the royal courts. In 1957, when the AOC of Saumur Champigny was established, the owner of Château de Brézé refused to be part of the appellation, saying that his estate's vineyards were the best and deserved an appellation all their own. And he was probably right. Unfortunately, the wines from those exceptional vineyards were terrible. Lucky for us, the winery sold in 2009 to Le Comte de Colbert, who recruited Arnaud Lambert from nearby Domaine de Saint Just to make the wine. He changed the vineyards over to organic farming and began producing truly stellar wines worthy of their source. The 2012 Château de Brézé Clos David is all estate-grown Chenin Blanc raised in stainless steel to preserve freshness. It has the slightly-oxidized note of a great White Burgundy and a lovely richness that allows it to pair with a variety of foods.

Spanish & Portuguese Wine News:

By: Joe Manekin | K&L Spanish & Portuguese Wine Buyer

Greetings all,

Quick in-store tasting news to start things off. Next week, Vibrant Rioja is back in the house to pour some delicious, gluggable, inexpensive Riojas for the summer grilling season. We’ll let you know the line-up next week. Redwood City tasting will be Thursday June 20th from 5-6:30pm. San Francisco on Friday June 21st from 5-6:30pm. I know it’s not our usual tasting day for each store, but the wines we plan on pouring are delicious and amongst the very best of their type. We think you’ll find it worth the trip to have discovered some seriously good values.

It's been a long time since we’ve shown Portugal some love. So this week we are going to correct that and feature two wines from Portugal's cooler climate Atlantic coast D.O.'s of Bucelas and Colares.

Bucelas specializes in whites made from Arinto grapes. Not only are they moderately high in acid, crisp, and refreshing when young, but they gain in depth and intensity of flavor with some bottle age, as the Caves Velhas Bucelas  shows. Portuguese hock, anyone? (see our website for an explanation...)

2007 Caves Velhas Arinto Bucelas - $11.99

Colares, the land of wind blown vineyards, producing wines that barely weigh in at 11.5% ABV and bring to mind a different sort of take on Nebbiolo based wines, is back on our shelves! Check out the Monte Cascas for a beautiful, singular drinking experience to enjoy now or some years from now.

2009 Monte Cascas Ramisco Colares - $69.99
