What We're Drinking

So why is the 2012 Ladera Cabernet—made from almost entirely from Howell Mountain fruit, from an incredible vintage—sitting pretty at $34.99? I honestly can't tell you. Maybe it's because no one knows how good the Ladera holdings in Howell Mountain are. Or maybe it's the pride that winemaker Jade Barrett takes in making a serious wine for a reasonable price. Or maybe it's because Ladera is an overlooked gem in a sea of Napa alternatives. For whatever the reason, I'm not going to complain. We tasted the 2012 vintage at our staff training yesterday and I was just floored by the quality of this wine. Dark, fleshy fruit cloaked in fine tannins, bits of earth, and in total balance, with enough gusto to go the long haul in your cellar. It's a whole lotta wine for $34.99, and it's made primarily from Howell Mountain grapes, harvested during a great vintage.

BDX Files: The First of 2012 Futures! Plus Bordeaux Tastings this Saturday at all K&L Locations

K&L Founder Clyde Beffa (left) with K&L resident Bordeaux expert Ralph Sands tasting Bordeaux in the Redwood City tasting bar.

I’m freshly back from Bordeaux and should be over my jet lag by Saturday, when we are hosting Bordeaux Tastings in all three stores, with yours truly in Redwood City from 1pm-4pm. The lineup and details are listed below, but first I would love to tell you about the 2012 vintage.

As of this morning we are offering the first wines from the 2012 vintage to be released on a futures/pre arrival basis, the wines will arrive in 2015.

Personally I am quite happy with the price reductions for these wine as they are down from the 2011 vintage and I like the charming vintage of 2012s more than 2011s.

 2012 Ch. Lynch Bages…$99.99

2012 Ch. Rausan-Segla…$59.99

2012 Ch. Mouton Rothschild…$379.99

My direct line for any questions on these wines or other wines from 2012 is below. Cheers!

Wine Wednesday: 1997 Langoa-Barton

There are a lot of reasons I like working for K&L, not the least of which is that I get to drink and write about wine for a living. But a close second to that is this: while our staff are a bunch of wine geeks, we're not snobs. Case in point is our Wine of the Week, the 1997 Langoa-Barton, which is selling for only $39.99.
