With the James Bond movie Spectre being released today, no time could be better to drink Bollinger. The most suave spy in the world has been sipping on Bollinger since Moonraker in 1979. While we can’t all drive a fully loaded, customized machine gun having Aston Martin, we certainly can chill down a bottle of Bolli! The 2004 Bollinger "Grande Année" Brut Champagne ($109) is as good as Champagne gets; all barrel fermented and full of masculine, Pinot Noir power and high class elegance. We even have a few bottles of the limited 2009 Bollinger "James Bond 007" Brut Champagne ($195) in stock for the diehard fan of Bond & Champagne!

Spanish and Portuguese Wine News 11/16/11: Talking Turkey

Greetings from Iberilandia,

Let's talk turkey.  We've got some new stuff that I think would make terrific turkey day wine.  Also, our last Vibrant Rioja Thursday tasting to look forward to this Thursday in Redwood City.  Finally, we have some new sherries – one everyday Manzanilla as well as a few special occasion/collectible things from Equipo Navazos.

1.) Thanksgiving wines

I have found that Albariño works wonderfully with the Thanksgiving meal.  The wine's ripe, juicy fruit seems to complement nearly everything on the table, and the acidity invigorates your palate and keeps you focused on the most important business of the holiday: eating.

Rioja is my default Thanksgiving red (to satisfy the French side of my euro inclined palate, I'll usually pick a good Beaujolais as well).  There is something about the generosity of Rioja's fruit and the gently balanced acidity which just works great at table, whether you're going Spanish style with lamb and roasted potatoes or American style with turkey and mashed spuds.

A Thanksgiving Cocktail

Photo courtesy of White on Rice CoupleLet's face it, Thanksgiving can be a little stressful. All that traveling, all that cooking, all that family. So why not warm everyone up with a cocktail or two? And of course, since this is Thanksgiving, shouldn't that cocktail be based on the quintessential American spirit: Kentucky Bourbon?

The Buffalo Trace Kentucky Straight Bourbon, which is currently on sale for $19.99, comes from America's oldest distilling site and has been named Wine Enthusiast and Malt Advocate Distillery of the Year numerous times since 2000. The whiskey is smooth, with mellow toffee notes, and is perfect for mixing.

If you can get your hands on some fresh tangerines, I'd highly recommend mixing up the Kentucky Sidecar proffered up by the White on Rice Couple, but if they're scarce, I'd mix up the Grapefruit Moon from the Cocktail Chronicles. (And, frankly, if you could work some Tom Waits into your Thanksgiving feast, you'd be my new hero.

Wine Wednesday: Turkey on the Brain

I have a love/hate relationship with Thanksgiving. I love the concept--an entire day devoted to gratitude, friends and family --and I love the food...mostly. You see, for me the problem with Thanksgiving is that there's too much food. Don't get me wrong, I love a big family feast, but the modern Thanksgiving meal often seems a little disjointed, a bunch of random dishes made to satisfy one person or another, all piled on a plate, but not always complementary. That makes finding the right Thanksgiving wine as hard as proving what the Pilgrims actually ate. Too bad America's best known historic oenophile Thomas Jefferson never weighed in on the subject.
