What We're Drinking

Just add duck crepinettes!

Buying ready to drink 1er cru Burgundy is not easy. For a couple of years I did the Old and Rare wine buying here at K&L and found it easy to find California Cabernet and even Bordeaux from collectors. But Burgundy… Forget it. They had to die, get a divorce or have doctors orders to part with the king of all Pinot Noir! This bottle of 2007 Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret Nuits St-Georges 1er cru Les Boudots ($99) comes direct from the property from our friends at Atherton, and like most of the 2007’s, drinks fabulously right now. This wine showed excellent sweet beet fruit, savory depth, and incredible finesse and length. The tannins are completely resolved, and went perfectly with duck crepinettes from the fatted calf in San Francisco. This is the kind of Burgundy that gets people hooked- you have been warned!!!! –Gary Westby

Hello Burgundy Lovers,

I wanted to let you be the first to know about the arrival of limited quantities of terrific red burgundies from Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret.  Vincent Mongeard has done a terrific job with the vintage.

These are NOT yet on the Web, so please call or email me directly to order them.

The wines:

2009 Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret Savigny-lès-Beaunes 1er Cru "Narbantons"  Price: $37.99

Allen Meadows scores this 88-91 Points, and writes: "As one would reasonably expect, this offers a step up in aromatic refinement with a broader and more complex range of red currant, blue pinot and earth undertones that can also be found on the rich, supple and very generous medium-bodied flavors that possess good levels of dry extract, all wrapped in a nicely powerful and focused finish that possesses dusty tannins." (Burghound, 01/11)  BH 88-  91

2009 Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret Pernand Vergelesses 1er Cru "Iles de Vergelesses"   Price: $39.95

Allen Meadows writes: "Vincent Mongeard describes 2009 as a "very clean crop and thank goodness because if this size crop had been less than clean, the sorting job would have been monstrous, in fact, so much so that we would undoubtedly have had to use refrigerated trucks the way that we did in 2003. I elected to begin picking on the 9th of September and brought in very ripe fruit, indeed it's the first time that I have ever seen this kind of quality linked to this kind of quantity and that includes both 1990 and 1999. Had the quantities been lower I wou... Read More »

2009 Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret Vougeot 1er Cru "Les Cras" Price: $69.95

This vineyard has a very solid limestone soil, thus the name. It is just across the road from the Grand Cru. The wine tends to be firm in character, with a mineral note at the finish.  This structured vineyard site is particularly well-suited to the soft and more forward character of the vintage in 2009.

2009 Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru "Petits Monts" Price: $71.99

Allen Meadows scores this 89-92 points, and writes:: "Generous if not completely dominant wood still allows the cool red and blue pinot fruit to reveal itself. The stony, precise, ripe and fleshy medium-bodied flavors possess excellent intensity and length. Again, the wood should integrate in time as there appears to be a sufficiency of mid-palate concentration." (Burghound, 01/11)  BH 89-  92

2009 Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru "Boudots" Price: $71.99

Allen Meadows scores this 89-92 points, and writes: "Ample, but not dominant, wood fights with the spicy black and red liqueur of pinot fruit nose that precedes rich and relatively powerful medium weight plus flavors that possess good mid-palate fat and are shaped and supported by the mocha-infused finish and prominent but ripe tannins. This is long if not especially refined and should reward mid-term cellaring." (Burghound, 01/11)  BH 89-  91

2009 Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru "Suchots" Price: $71.99

Suchots is considered by many to be among the very best of the 1er Cru vineyards in Vosne. As Jasper Morris writes: "Suchots begins with the the real perfume of a great Vosne-Romanée, but just when you expect it to build in the mouth it seems to fade away. Yet it does not die, and just as you are about to confess a slight feeling of deception you become aware that the subtle flavours still linger on the palate in a most entrancing fashion." (Inside Burgundy)

2009 Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret Echézeaux Grand Cru "Vieilles Vignes"   Price: $109.95

Allen Meadows scores this 90-93 points, and writes:: "from vines in Les Rouges du Bas planted in 1929 - Mongeard indicated that in 2009 he used 25% whole clusters. Somewhat surprisingly given the high percentage of new wood, this is reduced. As is usually the case however, the big-bodied and extremely concentrated flavors are brimming with extract which confers a seductive mouth feel to the austere and long but ever-so-mildly warm finish. The wood isn't shy on the finish but if there is any wine in the range that can successfully integrate its oak treatment, this is it." (Burghound, ...BH 90-  93

2009 Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret Clos Vougeot Grand Cru Price: $134.99

Allen Meadows scores this 90-92 points, and writes:"Much more temperate wood influence allows the fresh and intensely earthy red currant and humus suffused aromas to shine and does not alter the texture of the sappy, focused and overtly powerful flavors that possess fine complexity and excellent length. This is a classic Clos de Vougeot." (Burghound, 01/11)  BH 90-  92

2009 Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret Grands-Echézeaux Grand Cru Price: $149.95

Allen Meadows scores this 91-93 points, and writes:"This is also quite reduced and it's impossible to fairly assess the nose. The big-bodied flavors are also admirably concentrated and quite serious with a brooding character as well as a very firm yet ripe tannic spine that is well-buffered by the ample sap. Like the old vines Ech, this should be capable of absorbing its wood if given a few years in bottle first." (Burghound, 01/11)  BH 91-  93

2009 Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret Richebourg Grand Cru Price: $289.95

Allen Meadows scores this 91-94 points, and writes: " A notably floral, spicy and very cool nose is trimmed in noticeable but reasonable wood and leads to very rich, round and velvety big-bodied and powerful flavors that culminate in a moderately oaked but strikingly long finish. Again, the oak is not subtle on the palate but there appears to be more than enough concentration to handle it." (Burghound, 01/11)  BH 91-  94
