What We're Drinking

With the James Bond movie Spectre being released today, no time could be better to drink Bollinger. The most suave spy in the world has been sipping on Bollinger since Moonraker in 1979. While we can’t all drive a fully loaded, customized machine gun having Aston Martin, we certainly can chill down a bottle of Bolli! The 2004 Bollinger "Grande Année" Brut Champagne ($109) is as good as Champagne gets; all barrel fermented and full of masculine, Pinot Noir power and high class elegance. We even have a few bottles of the limited 2009 Bollinger "James Bond 007" Brut Champagne ($195) in stock for the diehard fan of Bond & Champagne!

Spanish & Portuguese Wine News: Special Cune & Contino Rioja Tasting Tuesday March 12th

By: Joe Manekin | Spanish & Portuguese Wine Buyer

Greetings all,

Let's get back onboard with a few Rioja events, one in our Redwood City store and another put on by our friends at Vibrant Rioja, up in SF. Mark your calendar for these dates:

Contino & Cune Tasting Tuesday March 12th (5-6:30pm, REDWOOD CITY, $5) - Join us in welcoming Contino winemaker Jesús Madrazo as we taste a few current releases, as well as go into the vaults for some library releases (which we will be offering on a pre-sale basis) of Contino and Cune. Jesús is one of the most knowledgeable winemakers in Rioja and it is a very educational experience to taste with him. My only regret is that I will not be here to taste these classics (don't feel too bad for me though - I'll be in Rioja....)  Let us know you're coming & rsvp here.

Saturday March 23rd (6:30-8:30pm) - From Vibrant Rioja: "Join Vibrant Rioja's Nina Sventitsky at Elite Audio SF for an evening of Rioja wines and great music. Listen to your favorite vinyl, cd's, iTunes on the best hifi systems in San Francisco. Charcuterie and cheeses by Boccalone." event link

And now, for some spring cleaning. We need to make a little room for the bounty of new whites and rosés that are just starting to trickle in. Here are a handful of last year's picks. They're all delicious and marked down so give one or more a try:

2011 Abad "Abad Dom Bueno" Godello Bierzo - $14.99

2011 Adega Cooperativo Regional de Monçao "Muralhas de Monçao"  Vinho Verde - $11.99

2009 Monasterio de Corias Grandiella Albarín Blanco Tierra de Cangas - $17.99

2010 Seculo Godello y Doña Blanca Bierzo - $9.99

2011 Viña Zorzal Rosado Navarra - $9.99

2011 Aphros Vinhão Rosé Vinho Verde - $12.99

Spanish & Portuguese Wine News: Exciting New Arrivals from Portugal

By: Joe Manekin | K&L Spanish & Portuguese Wine Buyer

Boa tarde Portuguese and Spanish wine lovers,

After a bit of an hiatus, Portugal finallly returns to the spotlight on this email list, as we just received in our long awaited wines from one of the Iberian peninsula's most exciting wineries.  Based in the Lima sub-zone of Vinho Verde, Aphros embodies some of the traits which make Portuguese wines (Spanish as well, of course) so exciting right now. Thoughtful, responsible (in this case biodynamic) crop cultivation, intellectual curiosity, a restless creative spirit, and an emphasis on crafting honestly made, brightly acidic, energetic, delicious wines for drinking!

Vasco Croft is a furniture designer and architect by training, who was a student of Steiner and biodynamics long before he began making wine. His keen fashion sense and Hollywood good looks (a composite of Owen Wilson and Richard Gere, perhaps?) may make him popular with the ladies, but it is his range of delicious vinho verdes which has quickly earned him some fans in the Bay Area.

We have chosen to focus on two wines you are not likely to see too much of, locally or elsewhere for that matter.  One is an amazingly, lip smackingly good bottle of 10% ABV vinho verde from loureiro grapes.  The other is a thought provoking rosé nearly the color of red wine, but with bracing acidity and refreshingly tangy red fruit - one of my two favorite rosés of the season in fact (right up there with Pradeaux Bandol, another direct press rosé, albeit in a very different style).  This one is from the dark skinned, dark pulp vinhao grape.  It's too bad we have had to wait until August for this rosé; fortunately though our warmest summer days are yet to come.

I'd be remiss if I were not to mention the winery's excellent top of the line red, as well, produced from hand harvested vinhao grapes grown in granitic soil, a really spicy, beautiful expression of the grape and granite soil (think Northern Rhone on this one).

2011 Aphros Vinhao Rosé Vinho Verde - $14.99

2011 Aphros "Ten" Loureiro Vinho Verde - $14.99

2009 Aphros "Silenus" Vinhao Vinho Verde - $39.99

Obrigado and Saude,

Spanish & Portuguese Wine News:

By: Joe Manekin | K&L Spanish & Portugues Wine Buyer

Good afternoon, everyone,

Things are heating up in the Sherry section with a new exclusive Equipo Navazos Manzanilla bottling! (you won't find it anywhere else around these parts).  Also a few tasting events here in Redwood City to look forward to, tonight and tomorrow night.

1.)  Equipo Navazos Manzanilla "I Think" en Rama (375ml) - $14.99

This is connoisseur sherry, plain and simple.  Bottled just a few months ago, without filtration, it is manzanilla at its purest and most expressive.  Get some before we here buy it all

2.) Passport to Vinho Verde tasting TONIGHT in Redwood City (5-6:30pm) We're pouring a focused selection of 3 distinctive vinho verdes.  Perfect weather for some vinho verde tonight....

3.) Vibrant Rioja tasting tomorrow in Redwood City (5-6:30pm) We will be focusing on a few DI's (yes I've hyped these wines quite a bit in the past few weeks; taste them and you will understand why) as well as continuing to explore the concept of single village Rioja wines. Also, since Riojanos love chorizo and the Palacios chorizo factory is located in Rioja (Logroño, to be exact) I will be bringing in some Palacios chorizo. $5 to taste.

Un saludo,

Joe Manekin
