What We're Drinking

Just add duck crepinettes!

Buying ready to drink 1er cru Burgundy is not easy. For a couple of years I did the Old and Rare wine buying here at K&L and found it easy to find California Cabernet and even Bordeaux from collectors. But Burgundy… Forget it. They had to die, get a divorce or have doctors orders to part with the king of all Pinot Noir! This bottle of 2007 Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret Nuits St-Georges 1er cru Les Boudots ($99) comes direct from the property from our friends at Atherton, and like most of the 2007’s, drinks fabulously right now. This wine showed excellent sweet beet fruit, savory depth, and incredible finesse and length. The tannins are completely resolved, and went perfectly with duck crepinettes from the fatted calf in San Francisco. This is the kind of Burgundy that gets people hooked- you have been warned!!!! –Gary Westby

Wine Wednesday: Antech Blanquette de Limoux

Every year it seems like the distance between Halloween ghosts and Thanksgiving turkeys gets shorter and shorter. And this year, Hanukkah Harry is hot on the bird's tail, with the Festival of Light starting on December 1st! Before you know it Christmas music will be playing in every store you walk into. It's enough to make you want to crawl back under the covers (it's pitch black at 6 a.m. now anyway).

Food-Pairing Friday: Pumpkin!

It's Halloween weekend and you know what that means...pumpkin guts! But rather than toss the pulpy orange innards of this season's jack-o-lantern, why not cook it? Pumpkin is sweet and earthy and as much a part of autumn as falling leaves. If you've already carved your pumpkin, but still want to eat something festive, try picking up some sugar babies--smaller, sweeter, more flavorful pumpkins--from the farmers' market.

Traveling with Wine?

Remember the days when you could get to the airport 20 minutes before your flight, run across the terminal and somehow still catch your plane? You didn't have to take off your shoes, or throw away your bottle of water, and you definitely didn't have to check your bags just because you wanted to bring a bottle or two of wine home for the holidays. Now, not only do you have to wait at baggage claim, but most airlines charge you for the "luxury" of checking luggage, which means those bottles of wine are now at least $25 more expensive.
