What We're Drinking

So why is the 2012 Ladera Cabernet—made from almost entirely from Howell Mountain fruit, from an incredible vintage—sitting pretty at $34.99? I honestly can't tell you. Maybe it's because no one knows how good the Ladera holdings in Howell Mountain are. Or maybe it's the pride that winemaker Jade Barrett takes in making a serious wine for a reasonable price. Or maybe it's because Ladera is an overlooked gem in a sea of Napa alternatives. For whatever the reason, I'm not going to complain. We tasted the 2012 vintage at our staff training yesterday and I was just floored by the quality of this wine. Dark, fleshy fruit cloaked in fine tannins, bits of earth, and in total balance, with enough gusto to go the long haul in your cellar. It's a whole lotta wine for $34.99, and it's made primarily from Howell Mountain grapes, harvested during a great vintage.

Take the K&L Blind Tasting Challenge This Weekend!

Put your Palate to the Test!

Join us for our first-ever 2-day Blind Tasting Challenge, hosted by the expert staff at K&L in Redwood City. The Challenge includes the Blind Chardonnay Tasting on Friday 10/12 (5pm-6:30pm) and the Blind Cabernet Tasting on Saturday 10/13 (1pm-4pm). Attend both tastings and vote on your favorites! The lineups will be revealed after the tasting, and the most popular duo of Chardonnay and Cabernet will be featured the following week on Uncorked.

This is a great opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of these two important varietals and their potential for incredible diversity in expression based on factors of terroir, climate, viticulture, and winemaking technique as you sharpen your blind tasting skills and learn from the pros. If you think you know Chard and Cab, think again...

All palates welcome! The main goal is to learn, taste, and have fun, and anyone is welcome to attend and share in these tastings, voting is optional. No RSVP required. Come on down!
